Co-washing, or conditioner washing, is a method of cleaning your hair without using shampoo. Washing curly, wavy and textured hair every day with a conventional shampoo can be very drying, and can create frizzy, unmanageable hair.
1. Co-Washing Conditioners
Washing your hair with a good co-washing conditioner is a great way to keep your hair moisturized and healthy. You can either co-wash daily, or alternate with a regular cleanser. Every head of hair is unique, so it's simply a matter of personal preference and what works best for your hair. Simply apply any of these co-washing conditioners to your scalp and massage just as you would with shampoo. Then rinse and apply conditioner as normal.
2. Clarifying Shampoos
If you are co-washing your hair, it's a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup. Most conditioners deposit a thin layer of conditioning agents on your hair to create slip and softness. These ingredients don't rinse completely away, however, and can leave you with dry, limp and lifeless curls. Clarifying shampoos gently remove product buildup and unwanted impurities, leaving your hair healthy, bouncy and shiny.
3. Sulfate Free Shampoos
Not ready to make the switch to co-washing? You can still treat your curls with some extra TLC by using sulfate-free shampoos. Sulfates are harsh detergents used in most conventional shampoos that create the foam and suds we associate with clean hair. Unfortunately, they can also strip textured hair of the natural oils which keep it healthy and moisturized. Sulfate-free shampoos use alternative cleansers to gently clean your hair without drying your scalp or damaging your texture.
