Styling Tips

  • Use after cleansing and conditioning your hair. (Do not towel dry or blot after your final rinse.)
  • Apply As I Am Leave-In Conditioner liberally, according to instructions. This will help prevent flaking once hair is dry.
  • Apply Twist Defining Cream to detangled hair while it is wet, in small sections from root to tip, then twist away!
  • Spray with water if hair begins to dry before you're done.
  • Air drying is recommended.
  • You may use a hood dryer on the low setting if time or weather is an issue.
  • For twist outs, undo twists and separate, only after hair is completely dry.
  • For added moisture, scrunch Moisture Milk or DoubleButter Cream onto hair, daily or whenever needed.
  • You may use Twist Defining Cream for shingling, too, by combing it section-by-section through clean, detangled soaking wet hair with a wide-toothed comb.
  • Dry thoroughly before manually fluffing and separating for style.

I have 3a curls that are on the thick and course side. This twist out cream works wonders and gives me hold when I plop overnight. My curls are defined and moisturized. I use a little as it is very thick and can weigh down my hair quickly. Overall I like it (:

I have been dying to know how I can get that wash and go look without an actual wash and go method because lets face it I am a 4a hair type and a wash and go would be a total wash and hot mess. I can't wait to try this product and actually use the directions to see if I can get that super defined soft and moisturized shiny look that I have been fantazing about since going natural about four years ago. Wish me luck I will be back to discuss my experience with this product. So far I have fallen in love with this product line just off of using the co wash from As I am. I can't wait to try the butter cream product as well it looks and smells amazing! I am a student so I really have to budget myself but when I spoil myself it usually goes to hair products first then food :)

This product I great for twist ant twistouts. It gives your twist a nice hold. My twist don't swell up like twist normally do, when using this product. A little goes a long way so you only need a little bit for on twist. If you use too it will make your hair super sticky and dirty. When I was done taking my twist out from protective styling, my hands were black and very sticky but I do like the product and I would use it again. I recommend it if you like twists/twistouts but just remember to use a little amounts when applying to the hair.

The Twist Defining Cream is simply amazing. Am new to As I Am products and I started off by using the entire line of products and so far I have had no regrets. I love this cream and I use the Double Butter Cream when am untwisting my twist it makes the hair stay in place and there is a gloss. My hair remains moist all week, this cream its not to oily, it has some moisture, you also get a nice hold and most of all there are no flakes in my hair or on my clothes. I like it and will purchase the Twist defining cream again.

4a-c. I can not believe the low rating for this product. Hands down, THE best pudding I have tried. I don't even attempt to try any other puddings people are praising because there is no reason. I've been using this steadily now for 3 years, unless I do a wash and go. LMAO at the complaints about stickiness. It's a frigging pudding! What were they expecting?!? And concerning issues with white residue. My hair always dries clear. Maybe the products they are using underneath don't jive well? I use this with As I Am's leave in and I've tried it with Keracare's NT and SM Detangler. Never had any problems with all three. It should be applied on damp hair for optimal results. I will say if you are looking for something with a soft hold, you are probably better off using a cream in place of this pudding because it does have some hold to it. But that's what I want for my twist outs. It doesn't have enough hold, however, to hold up in humid climates with my hair. That's when I opt for gel and wash and go styling instead. Anyway, I would say if you are unsure if you would like this product, purchase it from Target or Sally's where you can return it easily. But I believe most people won't be disappointed.

A lady at my gym recommended this product to me after I complimented her on her curl definition. This past week I finally got a chance to take my braids out and tried this product, and I LOVE IT. The curl definition in my hair was awesome and I didn't have to wait that long for my hair to dry. Also the product is not heavy and gives my hair a nice natural shine. I am so happy I got a chance to try this product and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for great curl definition.

I absolutely hate this product. In fact if there is anyone, in the Bay Area, who visits this site and would like to have the one I have please find a way to contact me. I don't want to waste my money, but if I keep this product it will not be used. My hair loves Carol's daughter products, foolish of me to cheat.

I am a year into transitioning from relaxed hair. I used this last fall and didn't like it. But I used it last night and I like the results. This time, I used the As I Am leave in detangler on wet hair (washed with the Coconut CoWash), then after detangling, I used the Twist and Define to do my braid out. No other prodcucts were used. The braid out left my hair with defined "curly-Qs" before loosening them. When I loosened them, it did tend to get a tiny bit frizzy but not in an undesireable way as most of my hair still had definition. I also notice that the hair is not shiny as it is when I use flaxseed gel or any combination of the Shea Moisture Curl Creme a Moisture Milk and/or Curl Defining Gel. But it WAS a more natural look, which I think is desirable sometimes. The curl is still defined. I saw a Youtube video where the tuber said of this product "Does not work well with others" and I would testify to that. Don't mix it with any other product line or homemade product or the results won't be good.

I have used this product for about two years now and I really like it. My twists always feel soft and my twist outs are well defined. However, using too much of the product will result in build up and makes my hair feel sticky. Also, it seems like the price has increased over the last year. I'm going to use up what I have but I'm searching for a cheaper alternative.

Product smells great, and held up pretty well to have no moisturizer. Pretty great consistency, okay slip, but it just wasn't moisturizing enough for me. At all. I love most of the As I Am products, but I guess this one just didn't live up to what I thought it would. The ingredients were great, and it did define very well. One of the best twist outs I had ever had, but it would not last long because of the lack of moisture.

I haven't used the product long, but for what I have used it for it did the job. I didn't like the crunch too much!
I used it after an L.O.C. method I no longer use because it was too much for my hair type and I don't like using an excessive amount of products.

    SMELL: Awesome
    CONSISTENCY: Medium Thick Creamy
    STICK: Slightly Sticky
    SLIP: Okay
Use: A little goes a long way, could last a while

I have a lot of hair, with medium to coarse texture and fine strands mixed in. My hair DOES NOT like to be weighed down.

I really wanted to like this product, but it does not define, moisturize, or do anything whatsoever for my braid/twistouts. It has a really weird, almost "tacky" consistency and doesn't mix well. I still have nearly a full jar and cannot convince myself to use the rest of it. I will not purchase again.

Amazing! I have 3c hair and did my second big chop about for months ago. I two strand twisted my hair with this last week and wore a twist out. I didn't have to completely re-wet and re-style my hair the entire week! My hair had a bit of crunch to it the first day or two, but it was super soft the rest of the week. This week I used it to twirl each curl around my finger and it came out wonderful. Day two and every curl is perfectly defined with no frizz at all!

To be honest it is an okay product. I wouldn't rebuy this product from their line, but I would be willing to try the line again since you can get it at Target. But, it wasn't anything extra special about this product for me. I have plenty of creams that do the same thing (barely anything).

I tried this product on wet and dry hair. On wet hair, it did everything it says - I had definition, hold and shine. By the next day the texture of my hair felt odd, coated almost. It wasn't smooth and silky like the day before. On dry hair, the results were even worse. I blew my hair dry to stretch it and then put this product on and it was just an epic fail. My hair felt dry, dull and heavy. I just wasn't impressed. It smells nice and is a good price, but the results were very lackluster.

I bought this product with very low expectations and not because of any negative feelings toward the line (I actually love their leave-in conditioner and Hair Milk), but I have negative feelings about anything claiming twist definition for my hair. I actually put my hair in cornrows and twist my kitchens. Not only this product redefine how I felt about this type of product but it solidified my belief that As I am as an affordable product line is excellent. It help define my braid out and just smoothing some on my kitchens left them curly and defined. My only negative comment is the consistency is very sticky. I had to scrub my hands to get them clean. However, I didn't have any build up in my hair and I will buy this product again.

I am not feeling this product. It made my twist out nice, the first day which was Saturday. Today is wednesday and I cannot wait to get home to wash my hair. This product left my hair feeling coated and a dull looking the next day. Since sunday, I had to put some As I am Moisturizing Milk or EVOO in my hair. Some things I did that may have contributed to this product fail, I sat under the hair dryer and used the twist defining cream on the ends of my hair on Sunday and Monday night. The directions state use when hair is wet. I am going to try this product again doing flat twist, air drying and not using the product on the ends of my twist.

I had high hopes for this product. I used it for twist outs, flat twists and braid outs. It left my hair extremely dry and paste like. I thought I may have used too much, but then the next time around, I used a smaller amount. Same results. I tried sealing it with olive oil, hoping for more moisture. Same results. Overall, I would not recommend this product and I doubt I will be trying anymore products from the As I Am line

It seems a little funny how when reading the reviews, you see a few negatives(people who weren't really happy with the product)...then all of a sudden you see this really great review that almost seems to be written by someone on the "inside" who's trying to save the product from being left on the just saying. Nevertheless, I will be trying some of the other As I Am products, but not the twist cream because I have no need to. I have heard really good things about this line...cant wait to try it next week:-)

Hair typr: 3c/4a Ummmm I dont really like this stuff. When I used it in the past, I got a lot of build up from this product for some odd reason. For example, after two days of wearing a twist out, my hair felt icky and smelled. When I was using this product I wasn't working out or doing nothing serious and it would make my hair smell. However, I did have define twist outs but my hair smelled. It also made my hair feel dry. Also, when I would apply the product on my hair, it would instantly make my ends feel dry. I tried to work with this product a million of times but it just never worked for me. Also, my twist outs weren't full like I like them to be..

Wow!! Shine!! My twists actually shine. Coconut Conditioning Co-Wash, Hydration Elation/hot oil treatment for 30 minutes, rinse, Leave-In Conditioner, and then Twist Defining Cream. The definition is beautiful and lasts with pineappling or re-twisting with Double Butter Cream. I do not like the way gel feels on my hair and am delighted with this nourishing, hydrating, wonderful cream that has given me the best twist outs yet. I have not experienced any flaking when combined with the Leave-In Conditioner and the Twist Defining Cream melts into my hair and makes it shine! I will use the product as long as they don't change the formula.

I think the key to this product is to use the right amount. I used on semi damp hair and the second time I love the results using a little more product and slighter wetter hair. Using more product also leaves your hair more moisturized. I'll have this jar for a while.

This is the best twist cream I've ever tried. It keeps my hair moisturized and shiny. I got compliments on my coils for the whole week and a half I wore them, and mind you, this is a style I'd previously worn week in and week out for a good 8 months. People noticed the difference this product provided. I've recommended it over and over. This is on my HG list.

Yes, I am a fan of this stuff too. I've bought a few different kinds of twist creams, all failed. Either they didn't provide a good hold for my twist, or they dried my hair out, or they left residue. This stuff works! it's the bomb. Twists are deined, great hold, lasts for days, great smell, curls are soft to touch. I've used it seperately from the other products in the line and it worked good. When I used it with the cowash, hydration elation condish, and leave-in... I was like wow! veryone was like, what did you do to your hair?! Definite keep, yes I will pay more over a gel that makes my hair crunchy.

Purchased this product from Sally's. I was excited to try it out. I LOVE the smell and the definition that it gives my 4a hair. On the flip side the definition doesn't last very long and it leaves a sticky residue on my hair after it has dried. My bf said when I use this product, he makes sure he doesn't touch my hair bc he washes his hands immediately after. If it weren't for that, this would be my staple product. It does last a long time. I still use it, but only so often.

I bought the entire line 2 days ago except for the oil spray and cleaning pudding. This product hands down gives definition and minimizes flyaways depending on how large and/or small you make your twists. Yet for me I absolutely hated the way it made my hair feel. It felt like straw, didn't feel moisturized and the texture of the product is also very unappealing to me. The cleansing conditioner is a keeper, i'm lukewarm on the leave-in, so if you are considering this product, i highly recommend you get a sample from a buddy first.

This product works extremely well. I used it on my 13 year old daughters 4a, shoulder length hair. Her hair is generally styled in 2 strand twists due to the amount of shrinkage and frizz she gets. With this product I was able to style her hair in a twist out and it never frizzed or swelled. Her twists were soft, shiny, and extremely defined ALL day! This is certainly a product worth the $22 for the 16oz jar. Love, love, love it. You don't need a lot of the product on the hair to get the best results.

The definition this provides is amazing and I have a few different hair types growing out of my scalp. I will say that I purchased this from Sallies for about $17.00 but the amount is enough to last a few months for me. I am actually still on my first jar. I will say that I like Miss Jessie curl meringue as well, but this is mineral oil free and I don't always want the ramen noodle definition that Miss Jessie give me.

My hair is soft and shiny. I have found a staple product for twists and braid outs finally. I'm a very pleased. I plan on ordering the larger size when I run out this. I love this!!! It works really well if you follow the directions. I used it on clean wet hair, you must let your hair dry completely before taking your twists out otherwise it will be a frizzy mess. This cream gives my hair a nice shine and a more defined curl along with a longer lasting twist out. It also cuts down on the frizz, and my hair is super frizzy!! Two thumbs up!!

Reminded me of Miss Jessies pudding or merigue. My hair was soaken wet. It dried really soft though. When I parted my twist I was really impressed.....My hair was soooo defined! and soft/moisturized with a lil hold.

Purchased this product along with the the Curling Jelly at Sally's and had high hopes. I used this on my daughter's freshly washed 4a hair. At first it seemed to absorb into her hair, so I proceeded with 2-strand twists. The next morning when taking off her bonnet, her hair felt greasy. We left it up because she had to go to school. When she returned home her hair was frizzing out of the twists. We took it down to wash it and my husband kept asking, "What is that smell?" "Is that her hair?"

We washed her hair and threw the rest of the jar in the trash; $22 wasted!

This stuff is amazing if you FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. I have combination 3c/4a hair that usually makes it impossible to get a chunky, consistent curl pattern across my head. This stuff is literally a life saver. I wash with the As I Am Cleansing Pudding and condition with Max Green Alchemy Scalp Rescue Conditioner. Then, with my hair soaking wet (just lightly dabbed with the towel to stop dripping), I slather this stuff on and make a few fat twists all over my head. Let it dry COMPLETELY before taking it out (a few hours with air-drying) and the result is extremely soft, natural curls that are shiny, and bouncy!!!! I've never been so happy with a styling product. There's no filmy residue, it's not crunchy or sticky, and it lasts for days. If you want the curls more elongated, towel dry most of the water out before twisting. This works excellent for a different, wavier look.

I usually don't leave reviews but I thought it was important for this one because like a lot of others on the site, I've been using MJ for twists and thought that was as good as it was going to get, but I finally, I got sick of that gross filmy feeling on my hair, so switched to this on a whim, based on the 4-star rating.... I'm hoping it gets to 5 stars soon. Definitely the best twist cream I've tried.

This product did not work well for my twist outs. I tried it on soaking wet hair with the As I Am leave-in conditioner. While it left my hair very soft and shiny, it didn't do much for definition or frizz. i usually can get 2-4 day twist outs with other styling creams. This one barely gets me to 2.

I LOVEEE this product. I have a mixture of 3a/3b/3c/4a curls and this product leaves my hair SO defined, moisturized, bouncy, and shiny. This stuff is a keeper for me. Bye bye shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie.

This stuff is the business! I have 4a/4b hair. One application lasted for days. I wore my hair twisted for two days, in a twist out for 3 days then on the evening of the 3rd day of twist out I lightly spritzed each section with water (reactivating the twist cream) added a dab (I do mean a dab) of double butter to each section and braided. I wore the braid out for 3 days! I used the packet that I got in the samples. I WILL be purchasing more and making a staple or special occasions! I love love love it!

I used this product for the first time last night, but here is what I can say so far - Positives: as stated in the description, it produced well-defined twists and excellent twist outs. I like to separate sections of my twist outs to create a fuller look, and my hair was still defined. Negatives: I really disliked the smell and it seems to linger. I can still smell it in my hair this morning. Chalk it up to personal preference, though, because my mom thought it it didn't smell bad and had a sweet scent.

In the end, if you want excellent results for your twists or twist outs, this product will get the job done.

Simply put....this is the best and I am a total PJ. I have yet to see ANYTHING that hold style and moisture for 4+ days. And my hubby can actually touch it because it defines but still stays soft. I have tried ECO and Jane Carter (too hard) and KC was too gummy! This product is amazing! My hair has grown a lot since use and I am guessing this is due to less manipulation and I also have LESS shedding! AS I AM hands down!

I like this product for twist outs, but I prefer the doubleButter cream by As I Am.

This is a great product for holding your twists and braidouts. It stood up to some really extreatme humidity and was very impressed. I took 2 curls away mainly because of the smell it reminded me of pink lotion and that is not a good memory. It does really go away it just get less strong. But the product does what is says!

I love just about everything from this company but specificially for this twisting cream, it leaves the hair so soft. The smell is also delicious!

Some have reported flaking but I have not had that problem. I have mostly 3b/3c hair and I just love how soft my hair is afterwards.

On the not so bright side is it didn't enhance my twists as much as I would like...but then again nothing does since my hair has a very looses curl pattern in many places.

For two-strand twists, this product is excellent. I am a fan of MJ's products and this is as good, if not superior. Gives great definition on twists, moisturing and smells good too.

I love this product!!! It leaves my hair soft and with a nice sheen. On top of that my twistouts last longer, 5 days to be exact. Usually my twistouts would last only about 2 days before retwisting. The twisting cream gave my hair great definition. This is definitely a staple for me!

Just got this product in the mail and used it for my twists. I am impressed! One of the few products (if there are any others) that doesn't dry out my hair once dry (my hair is possibly 4c or 4d!). I actually think it adds some sheen to it also (it doesn't look dry). Also adds suppleness, which I really need. I would give it 5 stars, but I want to see how it performs for the next few days and with a twist-out.

This did not work for me at all. My hair was very soft, but no definition at all. I must not be doing this correctly because I end up with a soft frizzy mess.

Oh this stuff is so lovely. Soft hold, well defined twists, great scent and good's the only, and I mean ONLY, "defining" product that I've EVER liked. I will be buying this (I had a sample).

The product made my hair was so soft and moist! I don't think I have ever had hair so soft and defined without being oily.I have never seen my hair so defined in general without crunch or that producty feeling. I received so many complements about the look and the smell. I loved how it helped me elongate my natural curl pattern! My hair looked so natural!

I give this product 4 curls instead of 5 because you have to let the hair completely dry before taking the twist down or the hair won't be defined. Also, if the section wasn't wet enough the that side would be elongated, moist and soft BUT WITH NO DEFINITION! It looked like a cottony mess with one section that way and wavy hair all over. Also, hold on the ends is broken easily.

LOVE IT! I generally stick with only natural products--shea butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil--because my hair is super dry. This leaves my hair soft, moist, shiny and springy. And the twists--I am on day three with just a satin cap and a few edge redos and it looks as good as day one. Stick to the directions on the jar; a little goes a long way. This is a 4b girl's dream product! LOVE IT!

LOVE IT! My hair is SO moisturized... not coated, but defined and protected feeling.. It smells good, has a great consistency to it. Makes my twist out look amazing. I really like this stuff. I don't even have to reapply it to twist my hair out at night... My hair is soft and fluffy, but with definition. Its one of those great finds.
Be careful on how much you put on though. It can make your hair hold water and not dry as fast overnight. However the results are great that its worth the drying time. I air dry with this and apply a little to the edges after a few days to brush them down... Great stuff. Get some!

I purchased this at the World Natural Hair Convention in Atlanta 2 weeks ago. I saw the ad on Curly Nikki so I decided to try it because it was a great price. When I say I really LOVE this product I really mean it. I have done 2 strand twists on my hair several times and have tried several different products, but none with the results I received from this product. I took my twists out and I had so much definition after 4 days. I couldn't believe it. I suggest you take a chance and try this product. I don't think you will be disappointed at all.
