So far, this is the best gel I've found, but I'm still experimenting. I really like the smell. I like that it is not super thick, so it gets distributed easily. It holds my hair well. Not five stars because I still have some frizz and my hair feels funny when it dries. It looks good, but I don't like the feel of it.

I am realy happy with this gel. Finaly I know how to work with it and it works great form my hair. Realy good hold and shine. I use it on top of the Curl Keeper and can use it the 2nd and 3th day just by wet my hair with water and put a new smal amount of gel on top. then after its dry I scrunch the scrunch out. When i pineaple my hair at night I just wet my hair with my fingers at the roots and in the morning I have great volume at the roots.

Even though ArcAngel is much stronger than Light Definitng Gel, ArcAngel is still a very light, smooth, gentle gel. It's superb for adding definition and popping strands into bouncy curls. Somehow ArcAngel shapes my hair in a way that really works for me so using it has become a necessary element of my curly bob.

I bought this after reading reviews and trying and liking the No Poo. The gel seems great at first, but by the end of the day my hair is dry and easily knotted. I have tried with and without leave in conditioner. I will use the rest of what I have, but I don't think I will be purchasing this again.

Best gel I've ever used. I use about two squirts of this and a pump of Devacurl Styling cream mixed together to get shiny, bouncy, beautiful curls! I absolutely swear by this product!!!

Love this gel. I have tried a few other gels in the Deva line, this is the best by far. With fine hair I need the hold but this one does not leave your curls crunchy (and any small amount of crunch is easily scrunched out). This is my HG Gel for sure!

This product is okay IMO. I have 2c coarse hair and I find that this product does not have as much hold as I would like. If I wanted my hair to have firm hold I would have to use two or three times the amount of product but I figure thats what you ultimately have to do to get good hold (hence the ginormous bottle of gel). I would give it 5 curls if it had the hold I preferred. Does give great curl definition and smells awesome but I can't say the same about second day hair (it was non existent).

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS GEL! Even though I have wavy tresses, I like a harder hold. I have found that my curls droop on the second day if I don't have a gel with a good hold. I scrunch about two quarter-sized amounts into wet hair over the Set It Free spray, and get perfect, frizz-free curls that last for two days. This gel has a nice fruity scent to it. I will never use another gel again.

Love this gel! I prefer it to the light defining one. I have 2C hair and I know as a wavy, I'm supposed to like the light defining one more but my hair just prefers this one. I finally found a silicone free styling product that I can live and thrive with! I use also a leave-in, Curl Keeper, this (I use the greatest amount of this), and some type of cream styler.
    Technique/Scrunching makes a huge difference!

i agree with raquell it does get a hard and crunchy feeling when it dries,
but as long as you wait until it dries to SCRUNCH IT OUT. this gels has to be one of the best gels i have used yet.
it holds and contains frizzes, it'll hold all day. the only bad part is the price. but its worth it if you don't use it daily.

i got small trial sizes of all the deva gels and this was the one i decided on this mainly because it has the best hold that really last all day! it does get crunchy like most gels do but i just wait until my hair is completely dry then scrunch my hair and the gel cast goes away another thing that helps is applying a small amount of jojoba oil after i apply the gel then letting my hair air dry.

I didn't like this gel at first mostly because I wasn't following the suggested "directions" for my 3b hair. Also, this has much more hold than the AnGel. It did take some getting used to but now after I scrunch out all the extra moisture from my hair with an old t-shirt, I comb this gel through my hair and re-crunch. Combing it through my hair allows me to get every strand and finally I put some on the top of my head and clip. I have to let it dry COMPLETELY and that is the difficult part. Yes, my hair gets very crunchy but once the scalp is dry I flip my hair over and release the cast resulting in bouncy, defined and hydrated curls. I get so many compliments on my hair now! From women and men! I give it 4 starts because it does dry out my hair if I don't put enough conditioner in it but I think it's just a matter of getting the application correct. I also love the volume!

I have 3b/3c and this gel is the best for this type compared to the angel. It defines my curl and gives me a lasting hold. If your hair is in the 2a 2b category deva ANGEL will be best for your type.

Dried out my gossamer/fine/medium mixed hair. My hair "looked" great BUT "felt" awful. I have tried both Arc angel & the light version. They both did the same thing. My hair felt dry and awful. I gave it 2 stars because it smelled very nice and also because I am only 6 months in to my CG routine. I have 3 inches of CG new growth hair and the rest of it is damaged by once a month flat ironing and sulfates!(ouch & eeeww) Maybe this will work better when ALL of my hair is new and healthy.(?)

Dries out my hair. I don't think it likes the glycerin. I know it doesn't like protein, though this product is relatively low on that. Hold was ok, that's why I gave it a couple of stars. I will not buy again. My hair: 2b, low-porosity, medium, medium, protein finicky.

Gave it two curls for its ability to make awesome curls, but...I used this in conjunction with the B'leave in (which is a styling product, not a conditioner!) and when I tried to use it on its own, it flash-froze my fine, 2C hair into a mat of knotted, frizzy, tangled hair . When used with the B'leave in, it made lovely, clumpy curls - which did not last for more than 8 hours. Had to wash and use this daily, or just had a mass of limp waves. :( ended up returning it when my hair turned into limp straw after a week of use. I think it is the hops in the ingredients...if you are protein sensitive, avoid!

I really love this gel. It's super easy to use and it has a nice hold and frizz control. It also smells GREAT. You really have to follow the directions of this line to a tee though, or else is won't work. That means no brushing!!! Finger combing and real combing only. The only problem is, I have to use A LOT to get good results. Still, this is one of my favorite gels.

Thick 4a, 3c in the front

Smells good (clean and citrusy, not over powering), plays nice with others, no residue, no flaking & it left my hair nice and light weight. The consistency is thick and it gives me nice curl definition but not enough frizz control on the top section of my hair. I got the 32oz and LOVE that it comes with a pump for easy application. I'll try it with my diffuser and see if that changes the frizz factor. I'd re-purchase.

This is a stronger holding gel than the original Angel, but unfortunately has no given me enough hold and frizz-control all on it's own. I have to pile on a second strong-holding gel in order to control my mane! However, it is nice... it smells like Sunny D and it's a nice to thing to smell during Summer time.

You really need to follow the directions on the bottle/ at the salon. Apply to very wet hair, allow to dry completely. Once the roots are dry, then you "break the cast" of the product, to remove the hard crunchy feeling, revealing soft, controlled, frizz-free curls.

I recently bought this gel after using the Deva One Condition and No Poo (two prodcuts I love!). After co-washing with the DCOC I applied this to soaking wet hair and let it air dry. The final result was soft hold and definition. However, I still had a sheet of frizz. I have used better products for half the price. This is a decent product overall but I will NOT repurchase this in the future.

This made my hair look good but my hair felt really gross, like rope or something, and it is normally nice and silky. Also, 2nd day hair was a mess. It smells good, like fresh clementines, but I think that the regular angel smells even better. I will exchange this for the regular angel, which I like a lot better.

This is quickly becoming my HG gel! I've only used it twice, but both times my hair has been the curliest it has ever been in my life! I've tried so many gels but none of them hold like this one does, and none of them turn my 2c waves into 3a curls. I Icequeen, use AG:Recoil, CIAB, then Arc Angel scrunched upside down both sides right side up, and again upside down and topped with BRHG and Bumble and Bumble Holding Foam. I plop, diffuse, do SMasters with KCCC and shake to reveal soft and curly spirals that hold all through my friend raking her fingers and boing-ing my curls! It's expensive but worth it!

This product is amazing but you HAVE to use it in a very specific way or you won't get ANY results. I have been using it for about 3 years now and my curls have never looked better. You must evenly distribute the gel into your hair and scrunch well to make sure it is dispersed all over. Then blowdry with a diffuser or let it air dry but DO NOT SCRUNCH or touch it once you begin drying. Only scrunch to distribute the product into your hair and then leave it alone. While it dries the curls will coil up and the gel creates a "cast" on the hair that feels hard. Continue to dry the hair until the roots feel dry. THEN you flip your head over and scrunch the hair to break the cast off and the result if PERFECTLY formed curls that are SOOO soft and have no frizz. I blowdry my hair with a diffuser with my head flipped over. I cup the curls into the diffuser and hold it to them in sections until it feels dry. Keep in mind it will still look wet because of the cast but you must resist the urge to scrunch until it's completely dry or you will mess up the cast and make it frizzy. Try it. You will LOVE it.!

I'm a long-time user and fan of the original AnGEL, but I'm growing my hair out and felt like I needed more hold. And I was going broke using a TON of AnGEL to set my curls. Arc AnGEL did not disappoint! I have more curl definiton, less of a frizz 'halo,' and use less.

I've been in search of a product to replace my discontinued product. I love it! It really gives good form to my curls. I have really long hair so the weight of it alone can work against me, but this product holds curls nicely and does not leave my hair feeling stiff.

Posted by gardenerwithcurls (Type 3b) on 09/11/2011

ArcAngel gives my hair more "spring" while AnGel makes it silkier and the curls soften. Depending on the weather I can use either one, but mostly I prefer ArcAngel because my curls have more of a defined shape with it. ArcAngel is best in my mostly dry climate because it's so moisturizing. It works beautifully with Set It Free and Mist-er Right on my thirsty thirsty hair. I'm glad ArcAngel comes in such a big bottle. My husband loves the fresh citrus scent of it, so he decided to start using it himself. He's never before had a gel that didn't make his hair crispy as it controlled fly-aways, but ArcAngel works like a charm. I can apply ArcAngel on dry or damp hair to help control frizz, but, I usually apply it on soaking wet hair.

Ok , let me just say that I picked this product up about a few weeks ago after seeing a pretty good amount of great reviews . So let me give MY opinion on it . First and foremost , the smell of this gel , which is of citrus , is really nice , but that was pretty much the only thing I liked about this product . This was pretty drying to my already naturally dry 3B/3C curls , and my curls were pretty much "slacking off" when it came to definition . Not to mention , made my curls super crunchy even with minimal application . Will not be buying this stuff or any other Deva Curl products for that matter . Sorry , but I will stick to my trusty Ouidad products :)

I love this gel for many of my curly clients. I feel it works best for Botticelli curls. remember it dries in the gel cast, but you simply have to "set It Free" after it dries for soft frizz free curls.

My hair is fine but there is a lot of it so it gets weighed down and frizzes a lot. I agree with the reviewers that stated this did nothing to define or hold waves. Like the smell, but overall very disappointed (in the whole line too).

Posted by frizzmenomore (Type 2c) on 04/09/2011

This gel was good in that it didn't leave flakes or make my hair necessarily crunchy. I was very disappointed in that it didn't really hold the curls, as they dried they became poofy and the hair was sticky. Alls well until the curls dried leaving them straw like and sticky residue. My journey continues for a good hair gel.

I really like this gel. I like it a lot more than the regular AnGell. It moisturized my hair a lot more and this didn't make my hair feel rubbery the way the regular AnGell does. I love the smell, too. It smells just like oranges. I use it with Set It Free and my hair doesn't fell crunchy or anything. It's very soft and I have a ton of volume without the frizz. I only gave it 4 stars because of the price and because my hair does feel slightly funky.

This is a very awesome gel for use on my hair, and I love the whole concept of the gel cast. This smells very delightful because of the orange peel extract. Nice hold and frizz protection. if i put too much when i graze over my scalp, the front feels kinda waxy, other than that great product!

Thankfully I bought the little sample bottles of the Deva products after my disappointing Deva cut. This product made my hair feel very tacky and sticky. I did try it one more time & wound up with the same results. The rest of it wound up in the trash. Disappointed after all the hype!

This is one of those "first time only" amazing products. I had to use a lot on my soaking wet 3a curls, but the definition and hold was great and as it claims, not sticky or stiff. However, the next morning my hair was just awful! It had clumps and knots and frizz! Maybe its better used with a really good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner? I tried using it again, but less, and that just made it worse. It does smell great though!

Posted by Cheetara (Type 2a) on 10/28/2010

This product is just ok for me. I like the results I get with it about half the time. I have to be careful not to use it too often because it will dry my hair out. Also I am not crazy about the smell. For the price, there are much better products out there. I get better, more consistent results with cheap gel like LA Looks Sports Gel.

When this stuff works properly, my hair looks beautiful. But it's hit or miss and I cannot use it more than 2 washes in a row.

Posted by amkohout (Type 3b) on 09/18/2010

I truly believe that Deva's poos and conditioners are as good as they seem..but the hype over the styling products is not one worth tampering with, in my opinion..due to the varying results.
I had Arc AnGell used once, just once on me, and I knew it was a hate relationship.
Most gels, even if they dry hard, are fairly easy to srunch out. Not this. My hair was crunchy, and dry.
I could stretch my curl out and hear the gel breaking apart to let my hair fall more loose.

The kicker? I hadn't even used that much of the product.

The gel DID give great curl definition (normally I have tight ringlets, but this gave extremely tight coils..which I found beautiful. The curlier the better) and I had no frizz.

You may be skeptical since I only tried it once, but I know when a product is wrong for me, and I hate having that producty feeling in my hair. I could feel it, touch it, and my hair wouldn't move with the product in it.

If you prefer a really good hold, with that crunchy look, this is it. I know some do. I personally do not, I love the way my hair moves as my head moves, and that is why I could not/would not use it again.

This product is GREAT! :O) My hair is 3c/4a and it does what no product has ever done for me. It gives me a soft hold that is not crunchy, defines, and eliminates frizz. It allows my hair to have VOLUME and SPRING. My boyfriend loves to touch my hair and now I can let him, and feel confident that he's not going to touch a bunch of creamy, oily goop. And my curls aren't weighed down so I don't have to be worried about them going flat. They're so "oingy-boingy"! Gave it 4 curls because I had to use EVOO underneath for light moisture, as this gel is not very moisturizing. Note: It's better to apply this in sections to be sure it's distributed evenly. It literally disappears in your hair and feels like nothing.

I absolutely love this styling gel! It is the best!! It is just heavy enough to hold my curls but not to heavy where my loose curls gets weighted down. One pump is all I need for my medium length curls so you don’t have to use a lot! ArcAnGel is great love it over my OneC its GREAT! Holds my curls all day and I have no crunch and great movement and it is not drying to my hair! I love that it is water soluble too!

Hair type: 3A, super fine texture, spirals.
I am not a fan of the Vitamin C/Orange smell, but I can totally overlook that. It gives such good results. No stick, no crunch. Very good hold and doesn't weigh my hair down. I apply a quarter sized amount on my shoulder length hair then comb through/scrunch.Then add another quarter sized amount and scrunch again. However, it is pretty pricey for a gel. Herbal Essences Set Me Up gel also works pretty well on my hair... but I can trust Deva for quality and health for my hair.

My type 3A hair has never been difficult to style. Until a few months ago, I was able to throw any styling product in my hair and it would look great. Frizz was not my issue. In fact, most things that would make other's curly hair a frizz ball did not faze mine. For some reason, my hair developed a mind of it's own...replacing my once pretty curls with super poofy waves and frizz. I thought my cut might be the problem, so I decided to trim a few inches off to take some of the weight off my ends. While my cut is great, this product really makes the difference! I have never had a gel that is so strong I am able to go without hairspray. Even though this product is super strong, it does not even feel as though it is in your hair once dried! Even with enough gel to make your hair squish when scrunching, it does not feel like a heavy gel or as if there is any product on your hair! Upon exiting the shower, I did the paper towel scrunch and spread a moderate amount on my hair. I scrunched vigorously and diffused. My pretty, defined, frizz free curls are back! I wholly recommend this product. I doubted it's ability but I am a true believer!

I love this stuff! I put it on my soaking wet hair and really scrunch it in before using a 100percent cotton towel to dry it. My only problem is that my curls seem to frizz with this product when I just let them air dry. I don't know why but it works better when I diffuse.

The smell is way too strong and not appealing at all. Reminds me of sweet garbage. The smell stays with you until you actually wash your hair with sulfates. Didn't provide enough hold and you have to use way too much. Made my hair feel very dry. Not for me.

While the hold was excellent and I didn't need hairspray, it made my curls crunchy, even a touch frizzy. I also noticed that when I put it on my wet hair in the morning, it seemed to stretch the curl out. Don't buy this product from NaturallyCurly.com if you are unsure, because you can not return if you are dissatisfied!!!

It works best in conjunction with other deva products but not to well with other brand leave in conditioners( FYI-tried it with mixed chicks leave in conditioner and redken detangling creme).

Add me to the list of people who prefer this over Angel (which is also great, but this one is even better at creating soft, defined, voluminous, frizz-resistant curls especially on my wavier hair). I'll miss the scent of Angel... but this orange one isn't horrible :)

My hair is 3c/4a kinky, coily and corkscrew curls. This product worked great. It didn't weigh my curls down and only took a couple hours to fully dry. I used DevaCare One and Set It Up underneath and my hair looked and felt very moisturized after it dried and no crunch. The only thing my hair was dripping wet after I applied everything that's why I gave it a 4 curls. Other then that great gel!

I love, love, love this product. Used it with B-leave and I got the most incredible results. Not dry, soft, no crunch, held my curls the best I have ever seen. Absolutely no frizz... Like I said... I LOVE THIS STUFF! My newest and best ever routine product line!

I really like this gel. It smells nice (like oranges) and leaves my hair very shiney, and moisturzed. It only received 4 curls from me because it doesn't quite have enough hold to last all day. I had very good results combining this with the AG recoil curlactivator. An option to try for 3/a hair, remember to scrunch it into wet hair after you get out of the shower that seems to work the best. You use quite a bit of this stuff so the bottle doesnt last long.

Like naturl34, this did not provide as much hold for me as DevaCurl AnGell. It also didn't do much for frizz reduction. I recently tried BRHG and found that I prefer a stronger gel. It might be better for those who prefer a lighter hold.

Oddly enough, this gel does not provide as much hold for me as the Devacurl Angell. I'm not sure what the deal is, but this stuff left my curls less defined and my hair more poofy overall. The dreaded poof! It smells nice and orangey, but just didn't work for me. I'll exchange it at Ulta tomorrow.

This has been the best product for me. It was not crunchy or oily. It defined the curls and I actually airdried and just tied my hair up in small bunches and I got really nice ringlets. Loved the product

I'm still on the fence with this one. I had been using KCCC, but it takes so long to dry and I have to go to work with wet hair for most of the day...not ok. This dries faster and gave me good curl definition. However, I noticed more frizzies and it might be a little drying. Next time I'm going to combo it will shea butter--this time I used KCKT.

I didn't like it when I let my hair air dry, but with diffuser it was great. I didn't need another product and my curls where full and shinny. Also they look pretty good the next day, just sprayed some Set It Free and my curls were revived.

VERY good stuff! It has more hold than AnGell. It is not too drying and defines my curls fabulously!

One of the best gels for 3c/4a hair. I leave most of Deva OneCondish in my hair & set w/Arc Angell and that's it! Add a little Set me up & above on really humid days. Curl shape is retained and shiny.

hair type 4a. I went natural about a year ago. I tried tons of products from low cost to too expensive. Once i tried the DevaCurl line of products I had no success. I gave up using a towel to dry my hair and after the third week of using the line I see the difference. These are great products; you really should use the whole line. I am loving them!!!

Deva gets high points for creative product names, but sadly this gel wasn't for my 2A halo. My hair dried practically straight and dry.

I was having so-so results with the AnGell and decided to try this instead, it works much better on my 3a hair. The hold is much stronger and isn't as crunchy as the other, especially in conjuction with the Set It Free. It gave me beautiful curls with no crunch!!

    Posted by 2lovelyhair (Type 3b) on 03/09/2009

This product doesn't give me quite as much hold as I need to avoid the frizzies. It works great in the front where my hair tends to be a bit straighter but in the back where I need more hold it is lacking. It is soft without any crunchiness but doesn't hold up all day.

    Posted by lauroon212 (Type 3a) on 03/01/2009

I love this gel! It provides the perfect amount of hold, keeps my hair from frizzing and smells delicious! It's not crunchy either!! I pair it with Set if free.

Not a bad gel and it does what it says, it is a stronger hold than AnGell. However, it is expensive and I can achieve the same look (or better) with a cheaper gel (LA Looks Sport). Also, Arc AnGell leaves a coating on my hair that makes my hands all sticky when I scrunch after my hair dries. It also leaves flakes on my shirt, too, which is gross.

I love this stuff! The only reason it isn't getting 5 curls is because my hairstylist can get absolutely amazing results for me using this, and I can get nice results, but not as good as she does. I'm still playing with it.
Not drying at all, smell isn't too strong, and I have A LOT less frizz than I used too. Overall it's amazing. Expensive but really works great!

I have tried for years to find ONE product that would hold my thick, unruly curls together. I used to use a mix of Paul Mitchell Mousse and and Curls Rock pomade, in MASS amounts and I'd end up with crunchy hair. Until now...I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE this stuff...a palm full is all it takes, and my hair is tame and shiny all day. Definitely an HG for me from now on!

This gel is awesome for my 4a curls/coils. Applying it seems like it might dry the hair out, but like a previous reviewer said IT DOESN'T. After it dries you're left with beautiful, shiney, soft frizz free coils. You also don't need that much product to get the job done. Definitely working towards HG status.

This stuff works pretty good, but my hair is picky. After about 3 months of use it wasn't doing much. I'm going to switch to another product and when my hair gets sick of that stuff return to this product.

ArcAngell is definitely the solution for those who need more hold than Angell. When I use it I find I need to use less product than Angell to get the hold I need. The one thing I like about Angell over ArcAngell is the protective cast it forms around the hair. I feel that feature gives my curls more definition and allows them to dry with the cuticle closed before scrunching it out.

I had better luck with this than Angell, but I still can't get consistent results. The only reason that I am continuing to try and work with this product is because so many of the curlies here have spoken so highly of it. I got great curls one day, but havan't since. I only use this on a weekend when it won't bother me if my hair doesn't turn out. I'm hoping that with practice I can figure out how to use this stuff consistently!

Sticky, stiff, unshiny, unhappy curls. Didn't seem to encourage curl formation. Didn't feel good to much my curls- no matter if I diffused, air-dried, or blow-dried. Experimented with amount used. Still gave me bad-looking hair. Try Ouidad.

Posted by shkiesz (Type 3b) on 11/02/2007

It's not entirely a waste of money. I've tried worse conditioners. I bought this with the whole Angell line and have used it for over a month as directed. It came highly recommended by the salesperson and has not impressed me. Does it untangle? Well, it's better than nothing. Does it moisturize? Again, I guess it's better than nothing. But my hair has looked better. Has looked a LOT betterm, in fact. And this stuff isn't cheap. I suggest using other products- like Ouidad- over this one. Too expensive and for poor results.

A good product. Eliminates most frizz and gives you good body. However, limit how much you use because it can make your hair a little dry and crunchy.

Didn't really define my curls much/ didn't reduce frizz. I felt like my hair was undone. Great smell though and it isn't heavy. My hair didn't feel producty. This might work better on 3c hair.

I think this is the best gel I've used on my hair. It feels as if it would dry it out, but it doesn't! The best is that it holds my hair together for a good three days, with a list misting. Only negative, frizzes show up in day two.

Sooooo disappointed by this stuff! I wanted it to work so bad. My hair looked like it had nothing in it. I just had a head of frizzy, undefined mess. It's definately not meant for thicker hair. It's on the swap board.

Absolutely love this gel! It makes my hair seem thicker, holds it in place all day and smells wonderful!
It's great with a real good leave in under it but with B'leave in the curls are even more enhanced.
I'm 3a and live in a very humid state (so I need hold even in the winter during rainy days)

I don't think I can praise this gel enough. I LOVE it. It is by far the best hair styling product I have ever used. And there has been many...
I have never liked my hair better in my entire life as now.
Maybe the fact that I have found other products (my conditioner at least) that work really well with my hair too is a factor, but still, LOVE this gel. Maybe it is the one...The HG.

The first gel I've ever really liked! Medium to strong hold and no frizz. Used after B'Leave In, I can finally accomplish 2nd day hair. It's also worked well over every other product I've tried. Just wish it had the Angell smell rather than the Devacare orange smell but it quickly disappears. Will defintely repurchase it.
