Works wonderfully for my hair! I have been using Devacurl products for a year and a half now and it has done wonders for my hair. This gel is not stiff and doesn't leave hair looking plastic-ky. If it ends up too "hard" all you have to do is scrunch a little and it goes soft but still with control. I highly recommend this gel and all their products.

One of my all time favorite gels. Smells good, good hold, no crunch

DevaCurl light gel is the best thing for my waves during the summer. Mousse and cream wouldn't hold the frizz down. This is a nice, light, fresh smelling gel that glides on easily and doesn't cause crunch. It's curly girl friendy, so there's no cones and no buildup. It's easily my favorite gel.

A LITTLE goes a long way.. or you'll leave your hair feeling sticky, like a film is over your strands if you use too much. A dime sized glob for my entire head of thick curls over leave-in conditioner works.

This gel is one of the worst I have ever tried. It left my hair dried out and feeling stiff, does not smell all that good either, and did not help with defining or defrizzing my curls at all. It also felt like it left a light film cast on my curls as well.

I will never ever use this gel again.

This is surprisingly terrible for my 3b, low porosity, frizzy hair! I haven't used Deva products for a couple of years, but I recently bought a 3 step kit for a good price. It came with a Deva Towel, No Poo, One Condition, Mousse, and this gel. I don't use mousse, so that will go to my sister. I love the towel, the No Poo, and the One Condition, but this gel is just useless for me. I used DevaCare ArcAngel for a long, long time and I still think it's the best gel (alongside of Ouidad Heat & Humidity gel) for definition. This "Light" styling gel seems to create frizz, and I get 0 definition, no matter how much I rake through my hair. I get better definition from using just a leave-in conditioner than I get from this gel. I tried Deva's "strong" hold gel (the DevaCurl one that used to be ArcAngel), and after a few uses it dried out my hair so badly I would up wasting the sample bottle I bought. This Light gel does elongate my curls, which is especially nice on my bangs, and it keeps my hair feeling soft, unlike regular gels, but overall it's not for my hair.

This is just OK. I started using DevaCurl after Ouidad left white flaky residue in my hair. I just started using curl products after years and years of not knowing how to treat my hair. My mother has straight fine hair and had no idea what to do with mine. I had high hopes after reading the Curly Girl Handbook, but this product didn't live up to my expectations. Whenever they use it at the salon, my hair looks amazing. Unfortunately, whenever I use it at home I don't have as much luck. My hair is always stringy and frizzy halfway through the day. I've tried using more gel, less gel, raking it through my hair, just scrunching it in, etc. I always air dry my hair since I don't have the time to diffuse it. I use leave in conditioner and cleansing shampoo but still no luck. This product just doesn't work for me. The hold is too light and my curls do not get defined at all. By the end of the day it is just a hot mess.

I loved this product! It worked fabulously with my 3B curls, and the best part? I didn't have to use a ton of product! It defines my curls really, really well and doesn't feel crunchy. Also, I didn't get a lot of build up in my hair. I wash my hair twice a week and was able to reapply in-between washes. I was hesitant because it was the first gel I have tried, but I fell in love and have stayed that way! This product makes me and my curls very happy!

Didn't think this product would work on my hair--now, I love it! It goes on clean, clear, leaves no residue, and can be used with a clear leave-in conditioner. The definition looked the same dry as when it was wet. My hair felt smooth, not sticky, had body, looked touchable, and the shine was natural looking. Though the humidity/dew points were low (winter), the product did not dry out my hair. If I wanted a softer hold, the steam from the shower would do the job, or I very lightly spritzed my hair with a leave-in. To regain a firmer hold, I lightly misted my hair with water, and the product was reapplied--still no build up. This product is just right for low humidity/dew points, while the Ultra Defining Gel is best for high humidity/dew points. All smiles here!

I was recommended this but it made my hair dry and sticky. It also smelled strongly of chemicals. It also only "worked" for half a day and I would have to wash my hair and redo it if i wanted to go out. I didn't even finish it and threw it away, something i never do. i have 3d curls.

This product is a great value! (I got it at Ulta for only 5 dollars!) and it lasts a very long time (in the bottle). I've had it almost a year; incredible. Especially since I have to use A LOT because the hold completely dies out in a couple hours, (as most gels tend to do with my hair, but especially this one- it's like I'm not even wearing hair gel anymore!) however, the frizz management IS pretty remarkable!

Also, the scent isn't that appealing, but acceptable.

All in all, it was a good product and I would probably buy it again for the great value. (If I ever run out of it! I'm convinced it can regenerate!) I think that this product could do wonders on girls with thinner hair than mine!

    2b, 2c, with a few 3a
Just tried this for the first time over the weekend and absolutely loved it. After co-washing, I separated my wet hair into sections, raked in this gel with my fingers, and let it air dry. Once dry, I had a really nice crunchy cast which scrunched out into perfectly soft curls. The is the first gel I've used that controlled my curl halo without having to add hairspray once my hair was dry.

51 yrs old, colored hair: I wanted to badly to like this product. I am not usually sensitive to smells or fragrances and I wish I knew which ingredient it is that is causing my problem but; the conditioner and this product both have some ingredient that burns my eyes from the fumes throughout the day. Almost as though I had Vick's too close to my eyes.

LOVE LOVE LOVE MUST PUT IN YOUR HAIR WHEN SOAKING WET , A HANDFUL of gel AND TURN HEAD OVER AND SCRUNCH SCRUNCH SCRUNCH (IN THE SHOWER) . when out of shower scrunch again in a towel or t shirt. Leave hair alone after that, DO NOT TOUCH. when dry hair will be crunchy that is the cast. must rescrunch hair to get cast out and then beautiful curls!!!!!!!! I also use some set it free when my hair is semi dry to get rid of frizz and give it more definition.

I'm new to the CG method. I've been sulfate free for about three weeks. That said, I've always used mousse in the past because I felt like gel weighed my hair down. But I bought these products (the 3 step system) after reading the book and watching the video. I have easily dispersed curls so I have to be careful what I use. No heavy stuff, please. And even though my curls are delicate they do curl up tight and bouncy with these products, if I leave them alone. So I give this gel 5 stars because it is light and doesn't weigh my hair down. I also get great second day hair when I just wet my hair and let it air dry.

I use this everyday. After conditioning with Davines glorifying anti age shimmering pak, I add a small squirt of this gel and then about a 1/2 a pump of Devacurl curl cream. It sounds like alot of product, but I use a tiny bit of each. It holds my curls frizz free and soft all day. I go through a bottle in about 5 months. My hair is 3C shoulder length.

I usually use Arc AnGEL (a fabulous product. Good amount of hold and very soft once the gel cast has been broken), but I accidentally bought a bottle of this instead. I thought I'd give it a shot: no sense in wasting money (esp. at these prices), right?

It was HORRIBLE to my hair! Drying beyond belief, it made my hair stringing and tangled if I applied to much. It I applied less, it just made my hair frizzy. I tried cutting it with conditioner, which helped a little and then with oil, with helped a little more, but it was still never GOOD.

I ended up throwing it out, it was so bad and useless.

Nice light hold, wonderful scent, light gel which defines my kinky tight curls. It is the last product I apply after applying DevaCare One Condition. I never have to scrunch out the crunch with this gel & my curls are nice n curly!

This product was a real let down. After using the no poo shampoo and conditioner from DevaCurl, I used this light gel to tame any frizz and enhance my waves. Though it smells wonderful, it fell very short of doing anything other than adding bulk to my hair and MORE frizz! There is little to no definition and my waves do not look hydrated but rather disheveled and ugly. I had to keep rewetting my hair during the day to try to scrunch it back into shape, but the more I scrunched, the more frizz I got. This gel was recommended for my hair type 2a, but I think I will opt for a curling cream rather than a gel. I have thick hair and perhaps the gel is just not the right product type.

This is one of the most amazing gels in the world. If I had money, I would only buy this one. I have 3a/b hair and i used this religiously. It smelled so clean and fresh and my curls would have the gel cast once dried, then I would shake, and they would be beautiful soft curls. I recommend this to anyone. I used this gel with the plopping method and it was AMAZING. I also used this gel on the day I went to a wedding and everyone complimented on my hair.

I like this gel it's a solid product. It has good hold for my super high density type 3b hair. The only reason I don't rate it higher is because it's nothing special. When I finish the bottle I will probably try another light gel.
Overall good product, works well, nothing super special.

This gel works pretty well in my hair. It also smells absolutely wonderful. I like how light it is- it leaves my hair feeling soft and bouncy once I scrunch out a little crunchiness. This gel doesn't have too much hold though (obviously, it has "light defining" in the title), so if you are looking for a heavier product, this is not for you. For performance, I would get it four curls. I deducted one curl because I need to use A LOT of this gel to get any results and it is expensive. My hair is 2c, high density, and about an inch below chin-length and I have blown through a quarter of this bottle in one week (using it on wet hair every day). I can't imagine how much I'd use if my hair were longer!

Good definition, increased curl, and clumping so long as I use it when my hair is almost damp rather than wet contrary to the instructions. Otherwise it's a terrible gel. It's helped by CHS Curlkeeper. It is expensive though.

This left my hair a complete frizzy mess with no curl definition. I have fine thin hair that has a tendency to go flat on top. This made it worse. Very disappointed and I used it for several months before reviewing it so I could give it an honest review. No matter how little or how much I used it just didn't work.

I've been using this product with the no-poo and one conditioner. I love these products and my hair looks amazing when I use them. I like the ingredients, the way it feels in my hair, and the scent is a nice added bonus. My main problem is that it only lasts the day that I do it. I never have decent or even wearable second day hair and anything past that is just worse. I always have to wear my hair up in a bun or ponytail if I don't wash it that day which is a hassle especially with curly hair (kind of ironic). The hair in the nape of my neck gets tangled beyond belief, more than with any other product I've ever used. The conditioner is nice but doesn't have too much of a slip which is annoying.
I don't think I would purchase this product again, but it isn't a bad product and it does make my hair look amazing on the first day.

This is definitely high quality stuff but the lightweightness of it is just a little too much so for me. I need more hold. I gave it 5 curls though because it is gentle and lightweight like it says and I saw an immediate improvement in my hair the first time I used it. It's super soft and not crunchy and smells nice - not offensive and perfumey. It makes your hair very soft and smooth after using the no-poo and one conditioner. I got it in a kit and really like it. It's worth the money if you're looking for the qualities it advertises.

I have been using this product all winter with amazing results! I used it with no poo, one condition and set it free. My hair had definition, shine, hold and moisture. However as soon as the weather got warmer in New England, this product literally made my hair worse than if I didn't use anything at all. I think it's the glycerin reacting with high humidity. I'm going to stash my new bottle of AnGel away for when the weather is dry and cold again. In the meantime I'm on the hint for a good glycerin-free gel which is hard to find. Currently using Giovanni LA mixed with almond oil.

I have definitely had great hair while using this product! It gives great hold throughout the day and also gives me soft, touchable curls. I only gave it 4 curls because it doesn't give me the best second day hair as other gels and never great third day! But still one of the best gels I have tried. Great for summertime!

Smells like fresh fruit...yum. Very light, easy to distribute and pliable hold. Not big on the hops; Tangles my hair if used in excess. This is a biggie during my winter regimen, (glycerin included). My summer regimen requires more moisture in a styler, (and glycerin becomes a big no no).

For some reason, I've been resistant to trying this, but now that I've started using it I love it! The crunch is easily scrunched out, and then I get beautiful, shiny, frizz-free curls. I took off one star because I find it a bit drying, even with a leave-in. But with something a bit heavier and moisturizing underneath - I've been using Curl Junkie Coffee-Coco Curl Cream Lite - I haven't had to worry about dryness and get the same great results. Will definitely buy again.

LOVE! I like how low maintenance these products are. AnGel is a very light colorless and odorless gel that you scrunch in your hair. Just scrunch in and you are done. No hairspray, no additional product, no nothing. My hair looks amazing once it's dry with no frizz and it's shiny and soft like it should be. Before DevaCurl I had to use detangler and a comb now I just use my fingers, scrunch and go.

I have been using this gel for about 2 weeks now in conjunction with the Deva three step system and finally feel ready to review it. I have to say I really like this gel. I don't need a lot to get the hold I want and it leaves my hair soft (after the gel cast has been broken). It leaves no flakes and I adore the smell, especially when layered over the One Condition. Today I was out and about all day around the city in 45 mile/hour gusts and periodic lite showers. I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the day when I finally got in front of a mirror to see that my hair looked great. It wasn't too big and there was virtually no frizz. I only gave this gel five stars because I don't like the whole gel cast thing. However, having said that every gel I have ever used dries that way so I have not yet run across a five star gel. I will say that this is the closest.

Worked very well for my 3b hair. I am mixed and have very fine hair but a lot of it and it's curly. I used the whole DevaCurl line and used this after I got out the shower. My curls weren't crunchy but nice, soft, and bouncy. Gel held all day, which was impressive because since my hair is so fine I get frizzy fast...no frizz today! YAY! Pretty good! Curious to see what happens on those rainy days, if DevaCurl Angel gel will win or mother nature. So far I am pretty happy to be having a good curly hair day. :0)

This was very curl enchancing. My usual 3a with some 3b was pretty much all 3b when I used this. Ofcourse, this could have to do with the fact that I used my sample/travel size in the summer and my curls are generally much tighter in high humidity. Still though, this turned my lazy ringlets into corkscrews. That being said, it could do better with shine and frizz control. Regardless, I like it. I have many other gels that I like a lot too, but I might buy this for when my curks need a boost.

My first experience with this product was at the salon after a Deva cut. I enjoyed what the product did the only down side was that are left with no volume? but beautiful defined curls. I am 3C and and have volume but I enjoy height. And that takes a little bit more effort, skill, product and time of course. Overall I like and will continue to use. Also works great with the conditioner which you can use as a leave in as well when diluted properly or not completely washed out.

OK so i live in the UK and was so excited to receive my AnGel in the post that i ordered from the states, but it was quite a let down.
I thought it would make my 3a/3b curls really well defined, basically how devacurl suggest. However, the first few times i used it it left my hair really dry, dull, and feeling really producty (not the 'gel cast' feeling, but a gunky straw like feeling). No shine or bounce what so ever. To be honest it made my curls less curly.
Then I read somewhere that it is best combined with One Condition (leaving some in your hair). So i tried again, this time i washed my hair and left in some One Condition, and applied the AnGel. This time it did leave my hair a lot softer and did slightly define my curls. So why the low rating? because whilst when applying it with some One Condition the producty feeling went away, as did the dryness, My hair was so frizzy, not enough hold at all and still looking quite dull.
I think this product will work well if you have low to no frizz and if you combine it with One Condition left in. But if you really need the control from a gel/styling product, then its not as well suited.

Expensive but leaves my curls soft and people can actually touch my hair without me having to freak out. The gel doesn't flake. I agree that it does feel like there is a sort of film over the curls if you use a lot but I'd rather have that soft, touchable curls than flakey, crunchy curls.

In the 90's split ends were fixed using a high concentrated super glue called LA Gear. The second cousin and ex-convict of "Los AnGeles Gear", this took me back to borrowing your dads Flannel button ups, "No Scrubs", and stuffed converses. Years later, people slowly began to put together the correlation between LA GEAR & hair strands parting ways, dooming all hair to a high-top ponytail / facelift prison. Word on the street now is AnGel, has made a second coming... and it's in this bottle, asking to borrow some money, ese.

At first this seemed to work pretty darn well. My hair was well defined, soft & it really did wonders for accentuating my random, spiral curls and taming frizz. After a while I noticed the bottom ends of my hair began dreading. The ends of my hair became dry. I had to cut pieces of my hair more times then Jessica and that gum "incident(s)" in 2nd grade. I was using only DevaCurl products at the time, clarifying every two weeks, then every week, and deep conditioning to no avail. I started to eliminate all my products until this product was the one left standing. I gave it a pretty good star review here because I truly believe there's probably a single ingredient in here that's doing it for me. I feel in a way - it's not entirely their fault for my picky hair who clearly has a mind of it's own.

When they say "gentle frizz control" they really mean gentle frizz control. I wouldn't suggest buying this product if you're hair is generally frizzy to begin with- it won't do you much. As far as the product goes, I do like it. It has a very pleasant smell and leaves my hair smelling devine (as well as feeling incredibly super soft and moisturized). I find it works best when used in conjunction with other Deva products. Overall, it's a good gel if you already like your hair, but just need a little added control.

This was the first DevaCurl product I used on my hair and it did not work well at all. BUT after purchasing the DevaCurl One Condition, No-Poo, and the ARC ANGEL Gel, my curls look FABULOUS. I would recommend anyone who hasn't been successful with this gel to try the ArcAngel instead. BIG DIFFERENCE! :)

So I have been using DevaCurl AnGel for quite a while and I have to say that my hair looks great for about anywhere from six to eight hours after I apply it. I do love how it practically dissolves into my hair while it's wet. It's super easy to apply, but using too much will cause crunchiness because it still is a gel after all. My hair is naturally a flowy fine mess that kind of floats when the breeze rolls in, this does give my hair weight, but it is not enough sometimes and it doesn't do really anything for the frizz at my crown. AnGel doesn't work the best on humid days either. It really dries up, causing my hair to dry up and frizz out. So I recommend this product to anyone with fine hair who doesn't want a whole bunch of hold.

So I've reached a stage where friends are started to ask me what I've "done" with my hair. No one ever knew I had "so much" of it, and, except during swimming or at the beach, most people never saw that my hair curls. "For the first time in my life I'm doing nothing to my hair," causes suspicion. So I tell them I've found some hair care products that really suit my hair. And this is completely true. I've never enjoyed my hair before, and I'm having a ball "getting to know it."

I have been using angel for almost 2 months now. My major complaint is how much of it you have to use. I have gone though half of the liter bottle in 7 weeks. I have to keep adding more and more of it to try to keep the frizz away. I have finally decided to give it up and switch to something else.

I am very pleased with AnGel. I had been trying the Ouidad and Curlisto product lines and really hated having to apply their multiple products in "sections". It feels so unnatural, heavy, and sticky. Finally, I tried the DevaCurl 3-step trial pack and I am thrilled. AnGel is low-maintenance and leaves my hair completely natural and soft, while still providing beautiful definition. The scent of the whole line (no-poo, one condition, and angel) is also really nice. Kind of a chamomile/mint tea with a bit of citrus. My husband can't keep his nose out of my curls!

The only reason I didn't give it a 5: it is a bit pricey. But I think buying in bulk online would make it worthwhile...I am definitely going to stick with it.

I’m terribly disappointed with DevaCurl. I spent so much time researching products and was looking forward to hopefully finding the right one….NOT so! I have thick 3c/4a type hair and the Low-Poo shampoo made my hair feel so dry and very straw like, I was baffled. I was desperately hoping the One Condition would make it feel softer and detangle my hair but I felt like it did absolutely nothing. I applied more to no avail. I rinsed out the conditioner after combing through my hair, reapplied a little to use Deva Angel and my hair started having white dots like the conditioner and gel was clumping together. It continued to feel worse and more disgusting. I’ve only used it once and terrified to try it again. Prior to DevaCurl I used Surface Vegan Hair Products and Mixed Chicks…I’m desperate to find something healthy for my thick curly hair. I'm only giving it two curls because the smell wasn't too bad - well not as bad as Low-Poo.

Good light hold gel. I do prefer the Arc Angel for my hair because I need a little more hold. I love the fruity scent. Most people have a love/hate relationship with all the Deva scents. I also love that this gel is not sticky ( I hate thick gooey gels) and rinses out well. It is not a heavy gel yet you get a great cast over you curls which I scrunch out with either Deva Set It Free or the Deva Set Up & Above. The one thing that I dislike about the Deva gels is that it always feels like I have a coating on my hair. The price is a little high and I tend to have to use alot of product for my short hair so I am not sure if it would be a good value for someone with really long hair. I have purchased this from Ulta and Curlmart but I will not repurchased again because I prefer the DevaCare Arc Angel.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this product. While I hate the idea of putting gel in my hair, this gel is the least crunchy of any other gel I’ve tried. My boyfriend dislikes the feel of my hair with gel in it but I can’t deny the awesome curl formation I get with this product. Typically I’ll use a very small amount of this product on wet hair before scrunching with the DevaTowel, then scrunch again when dry to release the gel cast. Occasionally I’ll mix the AnGEL with the Set It Free for softer-looking/softer-feeling curls.

Received a bottle from a friend who found it didn't work on her mixed race hair. I was put off immediately by the overpowering smell of gasoline or oil. Maybe it was an old bottle, but nothing you rub on your head should ever devolve into something so foul. Found it to be terribly drying and left my hair feeling slightly starchy and a little gummy when styled. Hair didn't have much give to it either - pulling off a pony or bun after using was virtually impossible. Kept it around as a backup when I've run out of my usual products, but eventually just chucked it. Not for me, that's for sure.

Been using AnGel for a year now. Tried other gels but keep coming back to AnGel. My hair is very fine and it gives me hold without being heavy. However it does not work alone. I have to use a small amount of leave-in conditioner and a curl enhancer. Putting all this together gives me soft curls with hold. This will not give you freeze-dried curls. Gives mild hold when combined with PT for fine hair. I also don't use tons of it or rake it through. Just scrunch in to the canopy after curl enhancer and leave-in.

This was used on me at my first curly haircut and I had tried it twice on my own and just figured I didn't apply it correctly. Wow. Purchased as part of the trial size set. It works alright, but it's a very thin gel and you need a lot of it to control the curls. By the time I felt like all of my hair was coated, I used a good amount of my trial size bottle. When my hair was dry (air dry only), the "curl cast" was significant. I'm fine with that - a little scrunching and it goes away. There are definitely other products that do a better job for the money.

Usually I use a cream for my 3b curls... (think Bb grooming creme, MOP texture lotion) so I was a little hesitant to try a gel... I bought the travel size and I have to say, I really like this stuff. It smells great, and makes my hair soft and shiny.

I'm only giving it a 4 though, because I felt like I NEEDED to pair it with the Mist-her right to get the look I wanted.

Also, I think I'm just most comfortable with cremes.

This gel is the best! I just got a deva cut yesterday and my stylist did an amazing job! My hair has never looked this good and I've tried every product out there for curly hair. I recomend scrunching the gel in while your hair is still sopping wet. This seems to give the best result. I took one curl away for price, but on second thought if my hair keeps looking this good its worth the extra cash!

For the price and effect, I will not be buying again. Thinking of swapping on the board. I found that it does smell good, but I have to use SO much to have an effect. It frizzes fast by the end of the day too. Trying to spray set it free on it when dry just leads to a sticky, icky mess. I loved the devacut but not the products. My 3b/c are very happy with the kinkycurly line though. cg method only a month but after 2 weeks done with the deva products.

Posted by JewelCurls (Type 3c) on 09/28/2010

This product was weird. I tried using it with the One Condition as a leave in as the bottles say for dry hair, which mine is, but i got this nasty mess, like clear, runny tapioca pudding, with little chucks! Now, whether you like tapioca pudding is neither here nor there, but I am personally of the opinion that this is not an acceptable consistency for a styling product. I wanted to see what the problem was, so I tried mixing a tiny bit of gel with every conditioner, leave in and styling product in my bathroom. It had the same reaction to every single one, to greater or lesser degrees.
So I decided to experiment: if it does not play well with others, I should not use it with others! I No-poo'd my hair, used a generous amount of One Conditioner, and then rinsed it all out *very* thorooghly. I will chalk this up to a moment of madness. My favorite description of my result was from my husband; he said that I "looked like a life-size Fraggle from Fraggle Rock, and not in a cute way". It was not crunchy at all, but it was dry, frizzy, undefined, tangled mess! Not cool... I think I may have to give up.
I am going to give it one more shot, this time still with not leave in (pray for me), but with a ton more gel (hubby's suggestion, since the last time it looked like I did not use enough product).

I had been hesitant to try this for a long time because of the mixed reviews. Also, having grown up in the 80s, I am wary of gels in general. But I have been using it for about a week, and I am pleased with the results. I have very fine hair, and it gives me good curl definition, shine, and volume. It isn't sticky or crunchy. I tried it by itself with no other products, and it did dry my hair out a bit. But now I am using it with a leave-in underneath, and my hair is not dried out. I gave it 4 curls instead of 5 because it would be nice if I didn't have to use other products to counteract the drying properties. Also it is a little expensive. But overall I am very pleased with this gel, and I will continue to use it for the foreseeable future.

I just recently went no-poo. This was my first styling product since the switch. It provides good definition... but not good clumping, and by the end of the day my curls were stuck to my head and totally frizzed out. This is a good product to build upon... I definately needed something with more hold and more volume. But it did keep my curls super soft.

Hair type: 3A, super fine texture, spirals. I find AnGEL a little too sticky. It can also weigh down my hair a bit. It is called a "moisturizing" gel. It contains castor oil as one of the first ingredients. However, I use this gel when I need more moisture then ArcANGELL when my hair is doing well. No crunch.

This is the best CG gel I've been able to find so far, but I won't say it's the best. It smells really great (I wish the other DevaCurl products smelled like this one, but unfortunately they don't). My hair feels soft when it's dry, which is what I want (I hate "hard" or "crunchy" hair). However, my curls look best right after my hair dries and I slowly loses curl and gain frizz as the day goes on. Maybe ArcAnGEL would work better in the humid summer weather? I'm willing to try it, but I hope that it smells like this one and not like some of the other products.

I tried AnGell plus Set it Free spray on my honeymoon in a hot & humid climate and had great results: full and (mostly) frizz-free soft curls (even the hubby commented!) Back home in the midwest, it does seem to make my hair fuller and less stringy than other products, but the results are not as fabulous. Will definitely take this on all my trips to warm places!

It's obvious that this gel was made by and for curly girls. This is definitely the best gel I've ever used and I've used many. I used to settle for gels that would leave hair sticky, believing that sticky was better than crunchy any day. But this is the first one that left my hair defined, soft, very curly, non-sticky, and non-crunchy. The gel dries hard... and after it's dry, scrunching it magically makes it soft and very beautiful. It is so incredibly gratifying!! I'm torn as to whether I should continue buying the whole line (great results but so much $$$!) but I'll definitely keep using this gel.

This is a great gel with a mild and pleasant lime or lemongrass scent. I rake it through wet hair, scrunch with a microfiber towel to form curls, and then I plunk my hair in the microfiber towel (also known as plopping) and let them dry overnight. The result is a head full of glossy, defined curls and there are no 'cones to weigh down my hair. Everything I want in a hair gel. 5 stars.

In the summer I've found this is ok as a light (albeit crunchier than optimal) gel -- even in the humid southeast, assuming my hair is in good shape. At the moment, however (midwinter, hair is fried) it seems to pull out more curl than it helps form. My corkscrews are confused, lifeless, stretched out, deformed and, no matter how much I scrunch when dry, crunchy. I also never feel like I get it evenly distributed in my hair. Prefer PM sculpting gel.

I am a big believer in DevaCurl's No-poo and One Condition, so I have tried really hard to like the Deva styling products, too. But after trying all of them, I have come to the conclusion that the whole styling line is one big fraud perpetrated on CG believers. This gel, like all of their other styling products, just makes my hair look stringy and flat. I can't get any sort of bounce or spring with ANY of their styling products. I have tried just about every method I can think of to make them work (damp hair, soaking wet hair, raking it through, scrunching alone), but nothing seems to work. As I said in another review, I truly believe that the only people who claim to get "good" results from Deva styling products are those who have yet to discover just how good their hair can look with other quality styling products.

After reading other reviews, i have to sya that I was very disappointed with this product. The ingredients looked promising. But, this produtc didn;t do anything (for me) that it promised to do. My hair was sticky, crunchy, undefined and really dry. I was baffled because my hair was really curly right after I washed it before I put this in it. It took a few washes for my hair to recover.

I am a lover of the DevaCurl line, but this just didn't do it for me. I have super super thick 2c-3a hair... on a good day it works and gives me good definition but ONLY if I use it with Mixed Chicks Leave in and revive with a spritz of water.... Otherwise my hair can be flat, crunchy and on the worst days...poufy and dry.

I really liked what this did for my hair but I had an extreme breakout/allergic reaction when using this and didn't figure out the product was causing it for a week. Used about 3 handfuls of the gel about a half dollar size each and distributed through towel dried hair (shoulder length, 3b). Would love it if my skin wasn't so sensitive!

I love this stuff! I have very fine 3A curls and I've been searching for the right gel. I use this gel mixed half and half with the lavender mist recipe in the book "Curly Girl". Put it in a spray bottle and it gives me just enough hold and makes my curls look great.

I was so excited to finally have these deva products everyone has been raving about but it did nothing for my hair. It somehow managed to relax the curl so I had no curl definition and the texture of my hair somehow managed to be frizzy and crunchy at the same time.

Because Deva products are water based you need to use more product so the hair absorbs all the moisture. Most gels coat the hair so you have to use less or you'll flake.

I think this may be the worst gel i've ever used.... it left my hair icky, not very defined and very frizzy. For $18 i think i should be given better results. I've heard some good things about Deva but so far it's not going too well for me.

I like the herbal scent of this product and the fact that it feels very clean, but it does dry crunchy on my hair, even when paired w/ a leave-in. After my hair drys completey I can scrunch out the crunch and my hair is shiny and mostly frizz-free. Alot is needed tho and it is not cheap stuff.

    Oh my goodness gracious.
This is HANDS DOWN the best product my curls have EVER seen.

After applying and letting my hair air dry half way and finish drying with a diffuser my hair felt and looked like it had no product at all in it. My curls were SO WELL defined and lacked any frizz. I bought the 12 oz bottle to start and immediately went back to "Ulta" and bought the larger size!

I have a combination of fine 3b/c hair and walked for 50 minutes today in humid NJ weather (dew point 62 degrees). It was great! I tried it on the the curliest part of my head an it was completely unaffected. It has been 3 days since my last conditioner rinse, so the true test will be to see how it holds up on day 1.

I really had high hopes for this gel and I actually liked the smell and the light weight feel of it. When I first used it my hair looked nice but I noticed there were some stiff parts and when it fully dried it look like I had nothing in my hair. It was just frizzy and unbrushable. I like to brush my hair before I shower but when I tried brushing, it tangled so bad that I had to cut a tangle out of my hair!!! Not using this again.

Posted by marlajap (Type 3b) on 03/21/2009

I really like AnGell. My 3C curls respond very well to it, but I *have* to use B'Leave-In *and* another conditioner as a leave-in with it, or I get too dry. And if I use to much, my curls get weighed down, the top of my hair goes flat and sort of ropey. I have fine textured hair with a lot of volume (more hair per square inch of head than most stylists have ever seen), and my hair is currently just brushing my shoulders wet, drying to my jawbone. I use about a tablespoon for my whole head, concentrating on the length, not the roots. It works great for me - expensive, but good!

I've been using this for a while, believing what lorraine massey, in her hoity toity accent, said about the products being "botanical." I discovered that it contains DMDM hydantoin, a preservative that actually releases formaldehyde into the product. How that is beneficial for curls I don't know. I'm angered, and I'm never using expensive Deva products again.

I honestly wish that I could give this product a 0! It has a slightly unpleasat dor to it, its not moisturizing, it pulls out the curl, caused my hair to frizz, and left me with curls that hadd barely any movement to them.

  • 2

Posted by Anonymous (Type 3b) on 08/06/2008

I've tried this product again and again, with and without conditioner underneath, with OneCondition and also with other conditioners, and I just can't get consistently good results. Two curls for its ability to reduce or eliminate frizz for me and for the great shine, softness and curl definition for the first few hours after having applied the it. After that my curls get slightly "big" though still defined. But by the end of the day my hair is dried out and looks coated with some whitish powdery stuff all over it and is terribly tangly, and I'm forced to shampoo a couple of times to get it out.

Posted by Anonymous (Type 2c) on 08/06/2008

This product smells incredible and everytime I wore it, people would ask me, "what perfume are you wearing?" However, it didn't hold any curl for me and I needed something stronger. My hair is on the thicker side and I have a feeling it responds much differently on fine/thin hair.

  • 2

Posted by Anonymous (Type 3c) on 07/27/2008

I plopped down a chunk of change for this gel and the Angell conditioner and the No poo. I had high expectations based on what the salesperson told me. Too bad for me. This is a sticky and unwieldy gel. It doesn't coat my hair shaft and leaves my hair feeling dry and brittle. I've tried it for a month now, styled it many different ways (air-dry, diffuse, blow dry). It's not worth the money. I recommend Ouidad over this gel any day.

If I could submit a 0 curl rating, I would, since that's what it did for my hair. It smells great and isn't sticky or heavy, but it didn't define curl or reduce frizz. My hair is between a 3b and a 3c, and it just didn't do anything at all.

The jury's still out on this one. It was recommended as the "best" curly hair gel out there; however, it leaves a residue on my hair, I have to experiment more, maybe I'm using too much along with the be-leave in conditioner.

Sadly, I was disappointed with this product. My curls had good definition, but they were very stiff and crusty! The next morning, the stiffiness did go away with some wetting and re-styling. But who wants to wait until day two for a product to work? I've tried mixing it with other products to see if the crustiness goes away. No luck here.

The smell is nice though. I prefer Curl Keeper, Ouidad Climate Control Gel or Paul Mitchell Styling Glaze.

It took me a little while to figure this one out, but I absolutely love it now! I rub about a tsp of it between my hands, hang my head over forwards, and scrunch it in that way into dripping wet hair. Dries a bit crunchy, but it's very easily scrunched out after hair is dry. Leaves beautiful shiny curls, and smells lovely! LOVE it!

This product did a good job of creating definition for my curls. I also liked that it wasn't sticky and didn't leave my hair stiff. I only gave it 2 curls because it did NOTHING to control the "poof" factor, which is very important to me so I will not buy this product again.

I'll probably use up the bottle, but this made my hair curlier than usual (which is not what I was going for) and left me with more halo-frizz than usual. My hair got bigger than I like it to, also. I am really disappointed becuase I thought I would love this product given how much many other culies do and given that I like One Condition a lot. Love this gel, gives me soft shiny curls and keeps frizz at bay. Wasn't convinced at first but the key was leaving in all my One Condition and scrunching in more gel than I normally would. On second day hair I'll run a little water over my canopy and then a tiny amount of Angell to get rid of halo frizz, also with good results!

This product is great! It gives great curl formation and it is not sticky or hard.

I like this gel--it gives good curl formation and controls frizz without leaving my hair sticky, crunchy, or wet looking. Its hold is pretty light, though, so my hair could get a bit fluffy during humid Texas summers or a bit droopy during cold, dry winter weather.

Great smell, no crunch BUT leaves my sort of oily/greasy looking. Too heavy for me.

It really holds my curls together, creating shiny, frizz-free and bouncy curls. I use this gel with the Devacurl Conditioner and Low Poo. I absolutely LOVE this stuff.

Amazing. Great hold, no stickiness, no flakes. Leaves my hair soft with great definition.
