I initially bought this when I was transitioning and attempted to do a bantu knot out with it and was quite dismayed at how sticky my hair was. I left this container sitting for almost a year before I attempted to use it again for a wash and go and I must say, I love this stuff now! I use this as the last ingredient layered over TGIN leave in, almond/coconut oil and TGIN butter cream. The key is to not be heavy handed with this stuff. A dab will do you and if you do more, you probably will end up with sticky feeling hair. I think this stuff does cause my hair to take a bit longer to air dry (sometimes I finish up with the diffuser); however, it's worth the wait because I get well defined curls that are soft to the touch and last for days. I normally pineapple my hair at night and put a satin cap over the ends and if I'm consistent with doing that, these keep my curls defined for at least 4 days. I wish they would put this in a pump bottle because it would be much easier to use. Also, I highly recommend working this thru your hair in sections so you can control the amount you're using and make sure it's evenly distributed thru wet hair (spray with water if it get dry while applying through the sections).

i love it makes my hair really defined and it smooths my cuticles down, you have to play with how much you really need in your hair though to much can my my hair feel overly moisturized and tacky i have 4a 4b fine hair high porosity hair, and my hair loves protein.
check out my video and see how i use it :angel10:

This product is a bit either love it or hate it. I love it! It is a tricky product to use because if you use too much, it can give your curls a rubbery texture - which is not cool. Just experiment with it - less is more. I find it an essential product during the summer because it does wonders for frizzy curly hair. Again. I love it.

I have mixed feelings about this product. It's the best gel I've used so far but I will most likely search for a better one. It worked really well in my hair at first but lately it hasn't been giving me the best hold. It does make my curls pop the first day and it leaves my hair really shiny. It doesn't make my hair crunchy or hard but if I use to much it does have a sticky/oily feel to it. I would recommend this to someone looking for a gel with medium hold or who doesn't want anything that will make their hair crunchy.

This product saved me from the summer humidity! I almost returned it without trying it after seeing the reviews but I'm so glad I decided to give it a shot! I leave in some devacare one condition under it and use it very sparingly, no more than a nickel sized amount for my whole head. I put a small amount of LA belle sport gel over it after forming curls for extra hold and it gives me amazing definition that lasts all day!! I have no problem with the texture of the product, it is like a thin jelly that applies really smoothly. It smells amazing too!

Honestly you don't really need this one. The gel is a weird clumpy/liquidly texture making it hard to apply to the hair. It's also VERY oily. It does have good hold and give definition like it says but that's about it. Use it with the curl enhancing smoothing or the style milk for best results because it's not a moisturizer. Definitely a product I could do without.

i would say that this is an alright product because it smells delicious and stuff and it seems to work good with people who have high density but it honestly didn't work well on my hair and it made it feel hard and crunchy and it made my curls look dull and straw like and it also caused my hair to fall out and the same thing happend with one of my family members that i let her use it .

This stuff was horrible. It was so sticky and didn't do anything for my hair. No hold, no definition, nothing. No matter how many different ways I tried to use this, it was useless. Ended up throwing it away.

Not a fan of this gel at all. I can't get past the icky, slimy texture and it feels like there's something gritty like sand in there. It did nothing for my curls at all. Still love this line in general, but this particular product didn't work for me.

Posted by JunyJu (Type 3b) on 06/13/2015

I'm giving it 4 curls instead of 5 because I'm not fond of the slight stickiness, or the strange texture. It's like a jelly, except hard. When I first used it, I wasn't quite sure exactly how to do so, as it came out of the container strange. But the smell is lovely, and I do like how it worked on my day 3 curls. I'm eager to try it with a wash n' go, which is my plan for tomorrow. The price was a bit much, so that knocked it down as well, but overall not bad. I've searched for a product for a while now, and this has finally given me peace of mind.

I love this product, however, took some getting used to. I started out with using too much, which made my hair stiff and crunchy. All you need is a very small amount. I just touch it with my fingertips. It goes a long way and lasts a long time. It works great on humid days.

Hands down, the best gel I have ever used, and I've used many gels in my lifetime! It provides great moisture, and hold for your hair, what it doesn't do is harden your hair. I've found that so many gels may provide great curl definition, but at the expense of making your hair stiff and hard. It ends up having no body, no movement. That isn't the case with this gel. It really is a miracle product, for me, and I'm sure for many other women. I would gladly recommend it!

I love this product! I would caution to be careful with the amount you use. The gel feels sticky, but I use it when my hair is wet right out of the shower, and I don't get crunchy or sticky curls. It gives my curls great definition. This tub lasts forever because you really don't need a lot. I just run a tiny bit over my hands and finger comb it through the sections of my hair. It's a definite love for me!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product! And the only way it's possible to not love it is if you fail to believe the very clear directions which say to use it SPARINGLY!!! I have type 2a/2b hair which goes mid-way down my back and all I use is the pad of my middle finger dipped in twice (once for top layers, and once for underneath layers) and scrunched into my wet hair. It defines my curls and yet remains soft and shiny all day. If used properly, i.e. sparingly, this product should last you a VERY long time! Also, and I love this about ALL of the Shea Moisture products, I don't even feel the need to wash my hands after I apply it.

first let me start off by saying that I tried this product when I first went natural over 2 years ago, and it stayed under my sink for the longest time. That was the old formula though.
After purchasing camille rose curl maker too many times, I had to find a cheaper solution because lets face it. I love curl maker but the $22 price tag is a turn off not to mention my wash and gos only last for 3 days until I need to refresh. I like to at least get 5 days. So I decided to pick up the curling gel souffle once again. If I didn't like it I could always return it. Gotta love Target. So co washed and used the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave in Conditioner.(I love that as well) Then put the curling souffle on top. Usually 2 to 4 sections I dip my fingers in and that's all you need seriously you use too much of this stuff, and it will not work. Also damp hair works best for me. I put a little of my xtreme wetline gel overtop of this but I realized that I didn't have to do that because the gel souffle is enough so next time I'll leave the gel out of it, but to soften it back I just put so coconut oil on top which works as well. I'm glad that this worked for me because its staying in my collection as long as they don't change the formula. The definition is great, OH! and one more thing it didn't flatten my hair, I had a lot of volume once my hair dried. My day 1 hair looked like 3 day hair! I also have 4A-4B hair I don't like to use hair type, but if someone reads this, they want to be able to relate so that's why I put it in there.

Less is more with this product. I've only recently figured out that sulfate free products make a huge difference with curly hair so I stopped using shampoo and now use a conditioning cleanser product. This stuff is the only thing that ever worked to tame my frizzy hair in humid climates but I hated how my hair felt after using it, just like all of the negative reviews.. Now I just use a very small amount after my normal little bit of red palm oil and my hair looks great.

I have 3b/3c hair slightly layered that when wet hits a little below my waiste.. I didnt give it 5 because it takes some work figuring out the best way to use it. Less is definitely more with this gel souffle. I towel dry my hair some, put a light amount of the souffle in brush it through then use a blow dryer to dry my hair. Absolutely love the definition of my curls and my hair smell great.

I tried this a year ago and was so disappointed I gave it a 1, then gave it away to a friend with curly haired littles. Ulta had a BOGO sale over the weekend and I decided to give this another go, especially now that I know how to use it. I have ear length 3b, low porosity, medium density, medium-fine, curls. I use this straight out of the shower with my Aussie leave in, a dollop of moroccan oil, and a pump of my regular SheaMoisture Raw Shea conditioner. I dip two fingers in and pull them straight out, rub my hands together and scrunch in from ends to top. The trick for me is to use as little as possible or my hair is left greasy. I'm happy I've given it another chance, my curls are soft and super defined. This might become my favorite product.

This stuff is amazing! After co-washing and conditioning, I mix it with LA Sports Gel and comb it through my very thick 2C/3A hair. Scrunch it with a tshirt and let it airdry - or if I'm in a hurry, I diffuse till it's nearly dry. This gives fabulous hold and sets my curls and waves. Once my hair is dry, I scrunch out the crunch and am left with shiny, soft touchable curls and waves. My Holy Grail styler!

I bought it a year ago thinking it was a moisturizing gel for defining curls and i was really suprise by the slimy texture. I tried it with different leave-ins then a butter/cream or oil but it was always sticky and ended dry.

I read a lot of comments on how to use it and finally bought from Zurich (i live in Switzerland and it's hard finding good hair products) the Shea moisture restorative conditioner which is a life-saver for softness, moisture and detangling.

I usually spray with water, then either mix equal small parts of the conditioner with the gel or layer the conditioner then olive oil and the gel. I've noticed that when i immediately braid my hair afterwards it gives a nice define look and moisturize hair.

But it is definitely tricky to use it.

I usually use Eco Styler Argon Oil or Olive Oil Gel and it works perfectly. But since I heard such great reviews for this, I decided on impulse to buy it instead of my usual when I was at Walgreens after I ran out of gel.

No matter what I do, when I use this my hair always comes out even frizzier, stringy, wirey, and goopy in a way that never dries out. Even when I use just the tiniest amount. I want so badly to find a way for this to work with my hair, since I won't have the money to buy more gel when I still have some.

I should have known better to try Shea Moisture for styling. I really like this company. I use their treatment masques sometimes. Many of their moisturizers let me down by the end of the day my hair is dry. Since I have this large jar I have to get rid of it by using it on my edges of when I slick the front back to wear a headband. I does have nourishing ingredients, which is why I gave it three stars.

Has a similar texture to As I Am Curling Jelly. When used on its own, it doesn't do much. But when used after the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, it's great. The only problem is that my hair doesn't like Shea Moisture, I finally figured out. Hair looked great the first day, but then from the 2nd day my hair started looking like straw. As I Am Curling Jelly is definitely better.

I use this product sparingly. Its great for giving my curls a bit of moisture with the definition of a gel but if I use it regularly or put more than a quarter size dollop of product my hair will be a sticky mess. I prefer to use it when I am getting near wash day so I don't have product build up and the stickiness.

As a >>>4c<<< girl with a LOT of hair, I will say this product was NOT MEANT TO DEFINE 4C CURLS, I repeat NOT MEANT FOR THAT!

But I never used it for that....

As a sealant this is amazing!!!!

You HAVE to use it after first spritzing your hair with water (or after washing ) add oil(and maybe a leavin conditioner, but not needed) and then add the curling gel. It left my hair feeling moisturized for DAYS, (almost 2 weeks!). No joke, my hair had never felt that soft. I think it should be a description on the label of how to use it, because for a while i had it on my shelf because in the beginning I had no idea how to use it. I had to go through lots of experimentation. I didn't want to pay for the product and have it not work. This stuff is DEF NOT A GEL and has 0 hold. But it is a great sealant, best I've come across(even better than all the oils including thick black jamaican castor oil I've used.) because it keeps the moisture in for DAYS, you don't have to apply oil every day(i mean you could if you want...) but i didn't. I did a twistout and twist after putting it in, and it came out nice.

use SPARINGLY like first time i used it my hair was frizz free but weighed down and a little sticky because i used way too much

this is the BEST sealant Ive found for my color treated porous hair. it doesnt seem to leave my hair quickly like oil does and easier to apply than my shea butter mix. Besides sealing it smakes the curl smooth and reduces frizz and increases shine

this will last a long time!

I haven't tested it that long but it gave me very shiny curls. I topped it up with another gel though but they worked well together. Not completely frizz free but that day I was caught on a wind so that must be it. I only had to use 2 fingers, the dip and twirl thing, to cover my hair.

Add me to the Wish It Worked For Me List. I love the ingredients, and for several hours I really like this in my hair. Eventually my hair seems to reject this jelly and it sort of regurgitates it. My hair feels soft and nice initially, but it gets sticky and clumpy in about six hours. No matter how much I use this can't handle the frizz, and it ultimately doesn't have enough weight for the definition I want. Sadly, I think I have the kind of hair that gave birth to the invention of PVP in haircare. As much as I would like to think I could squeeze perfect ingredients from the plants in my garden, my hair is the epitome of what inspires chemists to be innovative with formulations. Perhaps this jelly is not suitable for low porosity hair.

I would love to use this but I just can't get it to work. It's too slimy and too sticky. Because of my hair type, I have to use more than "sparingly" to get my curls to define which leaves me with goo everywhere, including my neck and sides of my face.

It only took me nearly 1 year--but I FINALLY figured out how to use this product! In the winter when it's snowing, I cut this half and half with a cream and my hair is actually kind of sheeny and so soft that I feel like I'm touching melted butter (is that a weird description? :] ). In the summer, because of the humectants in the product, it causes extremely cute afro puffiness so I cut down the amount drastically. I do a 70/30 of CocoShea Whip/Curling Gel Soufflé and my hair has never felt better moisturized. I do NOT use this as a gel because it has 0--ZERO--hold for any style I do, whether perm rod, roller or twist. I can actually detangle my coils pretty well too with my mix. The only thing I really hate is how tacky it becomes if I accidentally use too much. It's that agave nectar, me thinks.

I started using Shea Moisture products about a week ago. So far I am loving them. The best way to use this product is to use it with the smoothie. I poured an equal amount of both into the cap and applied to my hair, with a flat twist and two-strand twist combo. My hair feels and looks amazing. My curls came out great when I took my twists down. The souffle is pretty sticky when used by itself, but I did notice that it was not sticky at all when used with the smoothie.

I've been using this with the matching shampoo and Conditioner, leaving in some condish as normal. I dip four fingers in once, rub it around in my palms, and apply. Surprisingly good hold. It separates my curls into smaller clumps. As a girl with thick hair that's used to using a whole fistful of gel, his was surprisingly refreshing to use just a bit, and the hold didn't just dissolve in my hair like other gels but can be scrunched out still. Good product! And I bought it at for only $5.

It's working well for me when applied sparingly on damp freshly washed hair, after applying the Shea Moisture Curl Milk. I apply the milk thoroughly from roots to ends then dip my fingers into the souffle, rub hands together and apply mostly to the mid section and ends. I dip about 2-3 times, being careful to not overdo it. Then seal with a bit of coconut oil and I get happy shiny curls! I usually get 2 good hair days. On the third day it begins to get a bit dry so I will spritz with water and apply the Shea Moisture Smoothie or just spritz the Moisture Mist. These last two products don't work as well for me as the milk and souffle.

THIS IS THE HOLY GRAIL FOR MY HAIR!!! I have 2B, low porosity, high density, medium width, below my bra hair. It is extremely wavy and poofy on its own. When I discovered the SheaMoisture curly line (pink), I literally bought and used every product besides this one (they all work great) because of the horror stories I had read. Ultimately, I needed more definition and hold for my waves, and of course I was curious to see if this was as bad as everyone claimed ;) It is AMAZING!!! The trick is knowing how to apply it. The souffle has the consistency of almost-set jello, and you can't really break the surface of it... It tends to just shift and re-form around your fingers. Instead of scooping it out and trying to apply it that way (DO NOT DO THAT), just lightly drag your fingers across the surface of the gel, rub fingers of both hands together, then finger comb one section of your hair. Repeat until all sections are covered, and avoid very top of hair. Then, flip your head over and scrunch scrunch scrunch!!! You can then let it air dry if you want, but I use a diffuser on the low, cool setting and diffuse it to 90% dry while upside down. Adds the perfect amount of volume and definition, with virtually zero crunch! I also finish with SheaMoisture Curl & Shine Mist. If you have hair like mine, you will love this product!!! Oh, and it smells heavenly, like brown sugar :) I would give it 10 curls if I could!

No bueno for 3 hair in my opinion. A little does go a long way because if you add alot, your hair will be one greasy fur ball, lol!!! No hold either.

I purchased this product well over a year ago. This is a tough product to master. The first time I tried it, I applied it like a regular hair gel and was far too heavy handed. My hair was a sticky mess that never dried and I didn't get and curl definition. Very disappointed. A few months later, I tried again with less product, got better definition, but still the sticky mess. Recently, I think I have figured this out. I paired this with the Curl Enhancing Smoothie for finger Coils and they turned out perfectly! Awesome shine & definition. And no stcky residue. So, I thought I'd try it again on my wash and go- in the shower on soaking wet hair, I used my favorite As I am leave in, used a quarter size amount of the curl souffle on my entire head, then plopped for a few minutes. Curls were popping! I topped it off with the As I Am curling jelly to lock in the curls and my hair wad perfection. Not a bit of frizz in sight, and I always have at least a little bit of frizz. It's been a long journey with this stuff, but now I love it.

Oh, how I wanted to love this product. When I tried it on it's own, I had great shine, but a halo of frizz. So then I was reading other reviews elsewhere and saw that people were pairing it with other products within the same line. I tried pairing it with the style milk, and there was no change. I tried pairing it with the smoothie, and that eliminated the halo, but then my curls were crunchy! I tried scrunching it out, and even tried spritzing some water in to help soften it, but that didn't work either. So I plan to use this for when I'm wearing my hair up in protective styles, and probably won't buy again after the jar is gone :(

This stuff is GREAT! But only if you use it with the curl enhancing smoothie. They are meant to work together. I out the smoothie in my hair while it was soaking wet then aded the soufflé and diffused. OMG I had so much definition and almost no frizz. This combo is amazing.

I have used the other products from this line when I got the sample kit (curl smoothie, style milk, mist, shampoo, etc.) but this was the only product I was dissatisfied with. It really depends on how you like your hair to feel. I can understand that this product would work great as a sealant and being comfortable for people who regularly use gels and like to have a lot more hold on their curls... but it just wasn't right for me after the big chop. It felt too sticky and hard, whereas I was looking for softer curls that would feel like I didn't have any product in my hair at all!

I have tried dozens of combinations of products on my 3B/C hair, and nothing works better than than the combination of this gel souffle and the SM Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I combine a small amount of both in my hands and apply, comb through, then rake and scrunch. I get soft curls, no frizz, and a good amount of non-crunchy hold if I scrunch again after it's dry. On top of that, I have pretty decent second and even third day hair. It's a winning combination, and I hope these two products will always be available.

The product itself wasn't the greatest for my hair; however, when combined with the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (1/2 and 1/2), the effects are amazing! I can not wash my hair for 2-3 days and it's soft, luscious an bouncy! So, by itself, It's really bad, but combined, it's the best product i've used in a long time!

I bought this in hopes that it would be a better alternative to using a gel on my 3a curls. But after using this product my hair was really greasy, dull and frizzy with no curl definition at all. I will not be buying this product again. Didn't work on my curl type at all.

    HELL NO!

I hate this product which was a shock to me because my hair usually responds well to SheaMoisture products.

Desperate to get some definition going in my 4b (in the back) 4c (in the front) hair I tried this. Biggest disappointment so far.

It's much to greasy, didn't do a thing to define my 4b/4c hair and doesn't smell as nice as the other Coconut & Hibiscus products. Also left my hair in a horrible state when washing it out.

My first real thumbs down on a SheaMoisture product.

Very disappointing. I returned it after one use. NOT. FOR. ME.
