I have been trying to make this product work for some time now, and I really don't like it. I am currently transitioning and it made my relaxed ends tangled terribly which took forever to detangle. Not to mention this product did nothing for my hair except for leaving it a mess. And my natural hair looked so dry and frizzy. After trying this out a few times I will not be repurchasing it, instead I will use it as a pre-poo to finish it up.

This does everything that it says it does and even more. I swim daily in the summer so I need something to repair my hair after all the damage I put it through. And this thing is amazing. It also leaves my hair extremely soft. The only problem is that it smelled like rotten egg.

This mask does not do all that it says. Although my hair is left shiny and strengthened after rinsing, it is not moisturized. The consistency is like butter; however, it makes detangling difficult due to its very little slip. I will not be repurchasing this item after I use it up as a pre-poo.

I've tried this product quite a few times and each time I'm a bit more disappointed because people RAVE about it. I want to love it too :( Although it is not a horrible product, my hair would be the same if I were to not use it. My hair is not softer after use nor do my curls 'POP!' any more than some other conditioner with heat. I doubt I will repurchase.

3b hair type. This product did nothing for me. I may as well have used water only. Way too thin. A waste of money.

This DC is TERRIBLE. It does not provide a lot of slip, nor does it even leave my hair feeling moisturized. When I used it with heat according to the directions, my hair felt crunchy and dry before I rinsed it out. When I didn't use it with heat, my hair felt blah. When I rinse it out, my hair oddly enough feels stripped and squeaky clean and dry. I would NEVER buy it again.

This is the one SM product that I find the smell slightly off-putting, but not enough to outweigh the benefits. 4/5 because of the smell. My hair is very dry, low-porosity, and it responds well to this DC especially when I cover w/ a plastic shower cap and sit under the dryer at low heat. I use the masque along with other SM shampoo, conditioner, and styling products and my hair always feels so much softer after using this DC.

Let me start of by saying, this mask doesn't have slip so if you like masks with slip you may be a but disappointed. But it is so moisturizing! I use it as a leave in sometimes and it always leaves my thick 3c curls moisturized and shiny. It has amazing ingredients like all the shea moisture products and it smells soooooooooo delicious!!!!!! It has a rich and creamy texture but is also quite light and glides onto my hair like butter. I love love love this product!

This product is not the best of the best in my book. The soupy texture and blah smell of this DC was surprising. It offers very little slip and leaves my hair feeling like it needs more conditioner after it's been rinsed out. Even after adding heat for about 30 mins, I was not impressed.

I like the Shea Moisture line but my hair hates this product. Leaves my fine 3a/b curls feeling super dry. I've used it alone, with olive oil, coconut oil and results are the same. I read a review about using it along with a conditioner. I'm going to try that next and hope results differ.

First Shea Moisture product I outright hate and regret! I could not get this to work for me at all. I mixed it, flipped it, coddled this product with so many of my other products (Proclaim Cholesterol, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil) and it just would not and could not perform. Hair was so so dry and hard after rinsing it out. I finally used up the last of it and some olive oil I mixed in. Will not buy again, cheaper products (with cheaper ingredients, true) do a much better job at conditioning my hair.

there's only 2 things i absolutely hate out of all of the products i have tried...trust i've tried a lot. i am a huge PJ. this stuff did nothing to my hair!!! it left my hair feeling rough and drier than what my hair was prior to application. i tried to salvage it by mixing it with a ton of olive oil and castor oil....nope! still nothing! and the smell is overbearing!!! i used the entire jar hoping that one day it would work...nope! not to mention, i paid for it so i was going to use it up. wouldn't buy if it was on clearance for 50 cents.

Like others have mentioned, when I used this product my hair felt stripped, which is definitely odd for a deep conditioner, however it does work great as a leave in moisturizer so it's not a complete waste it you don't like it as a DC.

I also tried this as a deep conditioner and it didn't give me good results but I will purchase it again. A little goes a long way.
This is one of the only products that works well to give my hair a defined twistout. I mixed some coconut oil in with it to weaken the scent. The scent is rather strong, but not unbearable. I still re-twist my hair each night and I can always count on my hair being bigger and better, even more defined, and extra soft the following day. This is probably going to be my number one go-to when it comes to twistouts. I have a 4B, 4C texture.

I thought it was me, I'm happy to see it's not. I used this as a DC, my hair felt stripped and dry. I have a twa and my hair was a tangled mess. I had to go behind it with a different conditioner to detangle my hair & get some moisture back into it. I own 8 SM products and I'm on the fence about all of them. I can't figure out which products to use together, and the correct amount of product to use. At this time, none of the items will be a repurchase. I really wanted to LOVE the SM products as they do contain excellent ingredients & when purchased on sale are good on my budget.

This is my first time buying this product. I love the Shea Moisture line for my 4b/c hair but my hair doesn't like the Deep Treatment Mask. It makes my hair hard and it clumps together. There's no slip. I've tried different regimens with it but its just not for me. However I still swear by the other Shea Moisture products.

After reading all the conflicting reviews, I took a leap of faith and bought this masque. I used it last night after L'Oreal EverCurl shampoo and conditioner. I combed it through my thick hair - had plenty of slip, then put on a shower cap for about an hour. (I don't have a hooded dryer yet - just becoming a true curly girl). I easily rinsed it out in cold water - let my hair dry without adding any other products and went to bed. This morning I couldn't believe how good my hair felt! Silky smooth, shiny and my waves and curls were soft and springy! Loved the smell too. Only 4 curls since I have only used it once. After next weeks' DC, I'll see if it deserves 5 curls!

I've bought this twice. The first time, I used it as a deep treatment and it did absolutely nothing for my hair. NOTHING. I gave it to my aunt who, after using it as a leave-in, was raving about it. She graciously shared some of the last few scoops for me to try again and...boom. Leave-in magic. I regretted my rash decision and decided to purchase it again. After wash day, my hair felt incredibly soft, defined (without that icky noodly look), and honestly I was bombarded by strangers complimenting my hair! I almost missed my dental appointment because the staff there hounded me on my hair care routine. A quick trip to the CVS turned into a half hour natural hair care conference. It was the weirdest yet most wonderful thing. Like all products, it may or may not be as effective for you, but it just soared above SM's Curl Enhancing Smoothie in my Holy Grail hierarchy. My 3c curls LOVE IT.

I was really disappointed in this product because I have heard/read and watched a lot of good reviews about it. i have type 3b/c hair. i put on the conditioner and it didnt make my hair soft at all. it was hard to detangle as well. i tried it again by adding olive oil. that didnt help either. the only thing i liked about it was the smell. i like other products of this same line tho and they work well for me.

When I first began my curly transition, I immediately when to this product because of the price. It is super affordable and has done wonders for my curls! I have never been so happy with a deep treatment in all of my curly days. I use this product once a week and leave it in for at least 2 hours or over-night and my curls are always refreshed after I rinse the product out. It's amazing and I recommend it for transitioning curly girls!

The consistency is very light. This product most certainly did not fulfill my thick hair needs. Wasting my money was not an option for me, so I combined it with another deep conditioner I had at home.

I used this originally as a deep treatment. I put a shower cap on and sat under a hooded dryer for about 30 minutes. After I rinsed it out and my hair had dried, it had nice volume and curl definition but felt quite dry. It was also a bit frizzy, but I haven't found anything that will fix that for me yet. When I used this as a conditioner and leave a little in after squish to condish-ing with my TRESemme naturals conditioner, my curls were much softer, shiny, and defined. I think this masque helps to define my curls (I get a lot more ringlets and double helix curls when I use it) while the TRESemme gives me the moisture I needed. I can see how the smell could be a little strong, but I like it. I don't notice it lingering either, so that's not a problem (for me at least).

T he Frizz Fixer. Aside from feeling like butter on my hair, this leaves my hair lovely soft. The greatest thing about it, though, is that it fights frizz like a boss.

I do prefer the Shea Moisture Tahitian Noni and Monoi Masque slightly above this, because the Tahitian Noni and Monoi helps my hair to clump and curl. However, while the Noni and Monoi helps with frizz, too, the Raw Shea Butter is even BETTER at fighting frizz. So, I alternate the two treatments.

My hair is somewhere in that 2b-3a zone (it's so different from wash to wash, that's it's hard to decide). Medium density, fine texture.

This product was just........okay. I did not feel as if I had gained moisture retention after using this product. I sat under a hooded dryer for some time with a plastic cap covering the hair. I washed the masque off and was not impressed by the results. I will still continue to use the remaining product and will also try it as a styling agent. Fingers crossed for better results.

I simply love this product. I swim 2-3 times per week. It is essential that I avoid damage to my hair from swimming. My protection is conditioning and oil on my hair before getting in the pool and washing and deep conditioning after (shea moisture has the best deep conditioning and mask products! )

    It's...okay I guess.
The first time I bought it, it worked amazingly as both a deep conditioner and a leave in.
The second time however, not so much. After deep conditioning with it my hair still felt dry, and as a leave in it left a lot of white flakes in my hair.
Probably not going to repurchase this anytime soon.

I'm sorta iffy on the product. Most of my hair is still relaxed but this stuff does leave my hair feeling moisturized.

However, the slip with this stuff is near terrible. It feels like you have to water it down some to get it to spread evenly. It leaves some tangles in my hair unfortunately so I'm not sure about buying this stuff again, not the best from SM.

The scent alone is wayyyyyy over the top. I couldn't handle it. I enjoy the conditioner from the restorative line which also has a diluted version of the same intense fragrance. This is a decent masque but it is beyond heavy and odorous. I had to wash it out...weighed my hair too much. The restorative conditioner is heavy enough (still musky and earthy in fragrance) and can be left in for 15 minutes like a masque as well.

This is the best deep conditioner I've used so far. I put more on my 3b hair than on my scalp and left it under a cap for 5 minutes. This slip was good and I was able to detangle with no problem. It left my hair very soft and shiny. I look forward to using this again and again.

Posted by mslynne2001 (Type Unknown) on 02/22/2014

I tried this product as a deep conditioner and a leave in. As a deep conditioner, it was ok. It has no slip, so you can't detangle with it. But my 3C/4A hair felt moisturized. I added olive oil as suggested and I was really pleased with the moisture and softness of my hair. I also tried it as a leave in product. It made my curls & coils really pop, but it had no shine at all. Also, I don't really care for the smell. I guess it's like the smell of raw shea, but it lingers, and I couldn't stand it when used as a leave in. I don't think I'll buy again, but it wasn't a total waste. My son has an afro and he used up the rest as a moisturizer for his dry hair.

I have to change my review after I used the deep treatment masque again. The 2nd time I did mix it with Aussie 3 minute miracle and olive oil, but most of the mixture was made of the masque. You know in cartoons when something is really clean they make that squeaking noise. Yeah that's the sound my hair made trying to detangle. No slip at all. Seemed to create MORE tangles as I detangled further too. I said I was going to give it another chance but I just can't. Returning it to Walgreens ASAP

Think that I may have found my HG styling, yes styling product! My 3c, low porosity, protein hating, frizzy hair has been the bane of my life since starting to transition. After the first use of this as a styling product after using Tresemme Naturals Moisture as co-wash and leave-in conditioner, my curl is shiny, slightly looser, clumped and hanging heavier. These are the results that I have wanted for I don't know how long! I like the smell (slightly musky) and am going to stock up on this as I never want to be without it.

This is my DC HG. I tried the Organic Raw Shea Conditioner 2 years ago and it didn't jive with my hair but last year I was looking for an inexpensive deep conditioner and I was in the drugstore and decided to give it a try. My hair loves this stuff. It has a light shea butter scent and feels nice and buttery on my hair. I usually add in a bit of castor oil to amp it up and I am good to go. Just as long as the formula doesn't change I'm very satisfied with this product.

    DEEP CONDITIONER-----------------------------NO!!!
LEAVE IN FOR OVER NIGHT STYLES------HECK YES!!!!
(twist outs, braid outs, bantu knots, etc.)

I hated it before as a deep treatment. Left my hair dry and it felt awful. For me, it didn't do what it said it would.

THEN I got the idea to use it as a leave in. It says you can do that on the jar. As a leave in for twist outs or braiding or anything like that, or even if you just want to slather some of it on in excess and wear it through the day it gets my hair SO SOFTTT in the morning and helps me retain moisture the whole rest of the day.

4/5 curls for working great but not in the way advertised

WOW. I tried this last night and so far so good! I have no frizz and my hair is not greasy/oily at all! I see a great improvement in just one day. I admit, it might take a week to completely figure it out but I know that I was VERY leary of trying it after some of the reviews. I am excited to see my second day hair. Of course, I co wash at night and pineapple it, so this may be what come consider second day hair.

Do NOT buy this at Sally's. It is $3.00 cheaper online or at Target.

This masque worked SOOOO well for me!!! My hair felt like butter even before I rinsed it out! I have mostly 3c hair with some 4a parts in the front and it gets sooo dry so fast but this left my hair super moisturized and feeling fantastic! I applied it all over and got under the dryer for 15 minutes and rinsed throughly. Doing my braid-out was a dream and the results were amazing! I was afraid to try this because the Curl Enhancing Smoothie didnt work for me AT ALL so I thought I wouldnt have much luck with the other Shea Moisture lines but Im glad to say I was wrong. Totally recommend!

This stuff is great! I use it on dry hair as a pre-shampoo or pre-cowash and my hair has never been happier. I also use it as a leave in/styler for two strand twists on my super-fine 4-something hair. Note: Upon rinsing my hair feels stronger but like I need to add softness to it so I always follow up with a quick rinse out using Aubrey Organics White Camellia.

I loved this porduct, used it as a hair mask (after my shampoo, under a shower cap for hours, or over night...) left my hair smooth (but I had better results with other treatments like the hair mayonnaise), defines the curl pattern, smells nice.

I started using this several months ago. I first grabbed it by accident, thinking it was a curl cream. But when I read the directions, I realized it was a deep conditioner. Since I already had a deep conditioner, I used it as a pre-shampoo treatment for several months. Since I liked how well it worked in that role, I started using my deep conditioner (which can also double as an instant conditioner) as my instant conditioner, and started using this as both my pre-shampoo treatment and deep conditioner. It really works well, and leaves my hair feeling super soft! I have already purchased it again!

This is one of my first conventional DT's that was not homemade and was silicone free. I really enjoyed the results but it wasn't AMAZING. It was definitely note worthy, I would probably repurchase because of the ingredients and how its chemical free etc. Also, I did like that I don't need to use much. However, I feel like I am putting body butter into my hair and just feels kind of "wrong". Nonetheless, when my hair needs someone to save it, this stuff definitely delivers.

Yes Yes Yes Yes! This is the stuff I've been searching for! I use this as my co-wash weekly and my fro has never been happier! I know this is supposed to be a "masque" for your hair, but like I said, I use it as my co-wash, then I follow it with the SheaMoisture Anti-Breakage Masque under a shower cap overnight. My hair is so soft the next day. I just love the S.M. product line. So worth the money-- although; Target has frequent sales and online deals for them--so it's not too bad.

I liked it. The product had no slip, but my experience with masks is that they never do. My hair felt coated and stronger after I rinsed it out. My hair was not shiny nor did this mask detangle my hair. I will use this only a few times per year and especially in winter.

I don't like it. I tried to use this product both as a deep conditioner and a leave-in styling conditioner. Both times, I feel like it just weighed down and dried out my hair, leaving a weird film/coating on top. It definitely didn't hydrate or aid in detangling.

Sadly this product did nothing but sit on top of my hair. I had the worst experience trying rinsing it out. It seamed to cling onto my hair and not let go.

I have read that some people are using this product with good results as a twistout styler. I am hesitant, but maybe if I ever have extra time I will try it that way, but I want to be sure to be near a sink just in case I need to get it out of my hair ASAP!

I love this masque it is very hydrating. This moisturizes my hair like no other masque I have used and leaves it super soft. It also great at detangling. I think the consistency is perfect and it does exactly what it was made to do. Heal, Grow and Strengthen.

It's interesting to me how varied the reviews are on this product! For me, this product and Jessicurl's deep treatment are my favorites by far of the many that I've tried. This one is my favorite overall only because the thicker consistency of this product helps it stay put so it does it's thing. I will say, I think many people who didn't have such a good experience with this product might like it better if they tried it with heat. I always have much better results when I use heat while doing a deep treatment. But every curlie is different! :)

This is a great product. Easy to detangle with but the slip was not the best and left my hair very soft. The smell is nice too. Its not too strong but its a little musky. My only problem is there was no shine and I had to add extra moisture, it was more like it just sat on my hair. Overall I do like it, my hair enjoyed it but it did not benefit it much. I let my cousin try it on her hair and the results were very different for her. It made her hair very soft with extra shine. It had amazing slip for her. So I am giving it to her.

Love, love, LOVE this stuff! The first time I tried it, I used it as a wash out conditioner; didn't do too well there. Then I tried it as a leave in. Awesome stuff! It literally melted my curls. I got hooked to it when I first bought it months ago and I will continue to buy this for my 3B curls. My hair just eats this stuff up! =)

This product did not work well for me. I am a huge fan of deep conditioner - use it every other time I wash to repair and hydrate my hair - however, this deep treatment made my hair more tangled and hard to comb through. My hair felt like straw the next day. I have a feeling it has to do with my porosity - I have fine hair with High porosity. I would recommend this for those that have thicker hair with low porosity.

Staple product for me, as a cream styler. I've never used it as a deep treatment, as I can tell just by consistency it would do nothing for my hair being rinsed out. This is far better than the Curl Enhancing Smoothie, for me. The first 3 ingredients are Water, Shea Butter and Argan oil...u cannot go wrong here. It makes my hair soft, fluffy and frizz free. LOVE!

Ive done the Porosity test and my hair would only floated, so know my hair was lacking moisture and I needed to deep condition it but wasn't sure what I should use. I was going to try the herbal essence hello Hydration conditioner but I wanted something all natural without chemicals ( i heard they put lye in that now). I'd been reading that this works for some, then does nothing for others. I happen to be at target and was about to buy the hello hydration when I saw them on sale for BOGO 50% off and figured if I didn't like it I could return them. So I used this after washing my hair with Terressentials mud was for the second time, I didn't towel dry my hair I just put this on while my hair was dripping wet. It was easy to detangle my hair ( I don't use combs or brushes) and to me it had enough slip and a nice smell. I left the product on all night with a plastic cap and my satin cap on top. I washed it out the next morning but there really wasn't much to wash out I couldn't see the product on it in the morning. I have to admit while my hair was wet I couldn't tell the different but when it was done air drying it was soft and shiny. I love this product and will continue to use it as it was made for. My hair is low po and fine/thin, I use Castro oil and aloe Vera juice and all natural products since then its looking thicker and the strands are getting stronger. No more crunchy hair, lol

I bought this product as a deep conditioner because one day, my normal hair products just made my hair feel like straw and my hair was not taking them. So I got a deep conditioner. Ugh. I love SheaMoisture products but this one did nothing for me. The consistancy is very thick, which I like, but it just sat on my hair. It felt too heavy on my hair and felt like it stripped my hair once I rinsed it out. I am going to keep it and try it again when my hair finally gets back to normal but until then I will not be using this.

I love this deep conditioner. I, too, was hesitant to try it after the mixed reviews. The smell doesn't bother me (not even near stinky like the Aphogee protein treatment or the Dr. Miracle's products). I love the deep tingling feeling it gives (detox is a part of the deep treatment). It leaves my hair feeling clean without it feeling "stripped". I truly believe it has been a big benefit in getting rid of my scab hair. It's a keeper for me.

I don't understand what all the hype is about this product. For one, it stinks, I couldn't use it because I couldn't handle getting whiffs of this product as I deep conditioned. Second, it has no slip, and third, I live in Canada and this product is too expensive here for the results I get. I think this is one of the worst scents of product I have tried, no thanks.

I had no slip with this product. I am a 3a/3b and I normally use a variety of natural oils with a DP. I was able to apply the product by incorporating the oils, otherwise I was having trouble applying the product by itself. It made my hair totally stiff and I had to add oil to my sulfate free shampoo to rinse it off and detangle. I guess I'm going to have to continue shopping around for another DP. I used the whole jar before writing a review.

So i bought this yesterday and deep conditioned with it today and this is how i feel.
This was my first store bought moisture treatment so i don't have much to compare with.I hate the smell of this. It smells like frankincense, which i never cared for. However, i am willing to deal with the smell because this stuff is really nice. Heads up, if your hair has product build up, this is not going to glide onto your hair very smoothly. If you're hair is squeaky clean, this product has pretty nice slip. Not the best slip but slip none the less. My hair has never been so soft since i started taking care of my own hair. My hair is naturally frizzy. the only time it's not frizzy is when it's wet. this product did not send my frizz packing but then again i was not expecting it to. All in all if you're not looking for something to alter your hair's natural tendencies (my natural frizz) and you like having soft hair, give this a spin.
(my hair has no product in it at the moment, so this is a true review)

Posted by JustM (Type 4a) on 11/27/2012

I was very hesitant to try this because it has such mixed reviews online and is 10 dollars and far more than I like to pay for hair products. I am however pleasantly surprised with it. My hair has always been difficult to moisturize, frizzy, dull, and tangled easily. I though that was my hair type until someone suggested I try shea moisture products. Now my hair is soft and shiny and my curls clump instead of tangle. I even have lovely 4a spiral in sections of my hair I was certain were 4b/c but it turns out were just dry. If you are having any of the problems with your hair that I mentioned above I suggest you give this product a try. Just purchase it from a store that allows returns on beauty products.

The smell is hard to define but I find it pleasant.

This product does not work for me, and I am having a hard time believing that it works for anyone. It does nothing for me as a deep conditioner: very waxy and no slip. I tried using it as a leave-in; too heavy for my texture, made my hair greasy. I am currently using it as a rinse-out; does nothing, but I am trying to use it up. I just follow it up with a good leave-in. The scent bothered me when used as a leave-in, but I like the subtle scent when used as a rinse-out. Will not buy ever again!

My hair is always SUPER dry and I have tried a lot of Shea moisture products. Most of their products moisturize really well but none of the tips I have found from other naturals online have helped me to maintain that moisture. The moisture is usually gone by the end of the day. This product is the only one that keeps my hair moisturized for days. I don't have a problem with the smell. It isn't the greatest but I think its tolerable. One thing I do know is that i cannot do without this product.

No go! I tried this product and it just sat on top of my hair, it just couldn't be worked into. So it did NOTHING TO MOISTURIZE OR REPAIR MY HAIR. This product was also a task to wash out, I decided to read the label one more time and found it had wax (emulsifying wax) ladies, wax is no good, it may hold moisture in but it also keeps moisture out like water, oils etc that you might want to add. you always want to use a product that can easily be washed out.

I tried this for the first time, and it worked WONDERS for my dry, low-porosity 3b curls. I slept with it overnight, and after rinsing it, had huge, bombshell-style 3a curls that were soft and bouncy. But it smells SO TERRIBLE I don't know if I can ever use it again. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Migraine inducing. Disgusting, cheap musk; sour. Awful. Lingering even after I cowashed it out with something that smelled better. I'm hoping that SheaMoisture might take a hint from Curl Junkie and make their products in multiple (and lighter!) scents, so that customers could choose what they like. I will finish up this product because it worked great for me, but I dread the smell and won't buy again.

Curl type- 3A I haven't tried alot of these type of deep treatments and I read this one was so-so. I bought it at Walgreens at $10.99. My hair has been "free" for about 8 months but I noticed its been drying out a lot. So I have tried a few home treatments and the proteins in those recipes weighed my hair down and made it brittle. I tried this product left it on for 45 minutes under a shower cap. My hair absorbed most of the product and it was easy to rinse. My hair was so soft and moisturized when it dried! I am very impressed and I will keep using this product :)

I then do the baggy method and usually let it dc overnight. When I rinse it out my hair is soooo soft but still strong. I tried going without it, but I cant. its too good. I dont like it as a leave-in though...too crunchy. but i love it still.

I would not suggest buying this product. I have I tried using it several times on my 3c hair and ended up throwing 1/2 of it out.Didn't moisturize or detangle at all and it was hard to distribute throughout the length of my hair It is a thick product that just sat on top of my hair without doing much of anything. My Sauve Keratin conditioner performs way better than this product. I am still open-minded about trying their other styling products due to the positive reviews.

I experienced this drying phenomenon as well. It's baffling to me because the ingredients are almost identical to the SM Restorative Conditioner that I love. It felt really good while it was in, but as soon as I rinsed it out felt like using a sulfate shampoo. It just took everything with it. It rinsed too clean, which is the exact opposite if what you want in a moisturizing DT masque.

Posted by tonyajuanise (Type 4a) on 06/06/2012

My hair hates this product as a deep conditioner. It leaves my hair feeling dry and straw like, however before I decided to throw it away, I saw on the jar that you can use it as a leave in as well. So that's exactly what I did, I used it to set my twist out and I had good results. The reason why I give this product 2 curls is because those good results were back in 2011 before the consistency of the masque changed. At first it was a whipped and light, a little watery yet moisturizing, now it's super thick and seems not to penetrate my strands. I brought this jar last month and noticed the difference in consistency, after applying it, it just sat on my hair.

    Posted by curlynini98 (Type 3c) on 05/27/2012

This was okay. I used it as a deep conditioner and it had no slip and didn't go on feeling very moisturizing. When I rinsed it out, my hair didn't feel all that moisturized. What it did do was make my curls LOOK really moisturized and healthy and I got really nice definition. Now that my hair is sort of dry, it feels a little more moisturized but it still doesn't feel special. So basically it LOOKS great but it doesn't feel great which basically says in itself that I can find something better.

I really do love the results I get from this. When I first used it, I didn't get any kind of slip. So I tried combing through just to see how bad and it was a no go. As a last resort I added in a good glob of Aussie's 3-Minute Miracle and it actually came together really well. So I essentially mix shea butter with my deep conditioner.

The Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque did nothing for my hair. I allowed it to sit on my hair for over an hour and still nothing. It didnt feel like it penetrated my hair at all, it felt like it just sat on top. The only reason that I give it 2 curls is because my hair didn't feel worse afterwards, it didn't do any damage that I could see. Im aware that some people love it though, as a deep conditioner and as a styler, just not for this girl.

I have used this as a DC and as a styler (only when transitioning). Now that I am natural I use this a a DC only. It works with a plastic cap over your head. I usually only do it for about 30 minutes, but when I did it for 1 hour my hair felt incredibly soft. I hate the smell though. I've had to play with it to figure out a way to get it to work for me just because there aren't clear defined instructions on how to use it. I gave it only 4 stars because sometimes it works really well or sometimes it's just bleh. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't the greatest. I probably won't buy this again.

Initally, I thought about taking this product back because it left my hair feeling dry still. I used to use the Macadamia Nut Deep Repair Masque, which was amazing, but it's kind of expensive, so I was looking for something cheaper, but still does great work. I bought this product at Walgreens, but i also found it at Target (Target is cheaper than Walgreens). I bought this because I love Shea Butter and it's apart of my hair regimen, so I thought this would be great product. When I used it, it made my hair feel dry, but on the plus side, I got a lot of bounce and shine back in my curls and it smelled amazing. I got a little on my shirt and I had my nose attached to my shirt lol.

I felt that as a Deep Treatment product, it should have put a lot of moisture, but it didn't. Thank GOD I had other products that can put the moisture in my hair, but it smelled great and put life back in my hair, which is why I gave it a three. I probably would by this product again, but if there was a better product that can give me moisture, put life in my hair, and smells good, I'd prolly drop this product lol.

It is a very good deep conditioning mask. I leave it on for about an hour with a plastic cap. I never really used it as a styler but when I stretch my hair using the banding method I use a dime size of it per section to control the frizz. I definitely will buy it again.

This stuff was terrible for my hair. It left it super dry, hard and brittle. It didn't work well at all I had to deep condition my hair afterwards to get some moisture back in it. I wanted to like this but it just didn't happen.

Ok i really wanted to like this stuff because i have wanted to try it for the longest me personally im very cheap period when it comes to anything so i was trying my best to see past the price well i bought it and hate it i was so disappointed because i really needed a deep condish which is why i bought it i applied it after washing my hair and notice that it provided NO slip what so ever so i was ok maybe ill let it sit for a while i rinsed it out and my hair felt like wet straw i dont know why after this bad experience i want to try their other products but this one wasnt for me besides using it on dry hair as a styling aide never again!

DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT WITH COLOR TREATED HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a good product if you have your natural hair color. However, for dyed hair it sucks out the moisture and leaves your hair tangled with knots. If you use this as a detangler, make sure you comb hair with this in before rinsing out. You may even want to detangle hair before putting this product in your hair.

I use this product to replace gel when I want to have that slick look or just to control fly-aways. It is a good deep conditioner if you do not use any other conditioner along with it. I think it's just like applying raw shea butter to the hair it gets a little hard until you wash it out. Good product with multiple uses.

Everything in Shea Moisture's raw shea butter line blows me away. I love this deep treatment masque. I use it after the moisture retention shampoo and the restorative conditioner. It's a great moisturizer especially for my thick 4a hair. My mom and my sister love it too.

OMG my hair hates this product. It did nothing for my hair. As I'm putting this product on I noticed that it was not smooth at all, and the smell is not all that great. I thought that maybe once the conditioner sets for a while, it would become a bit smooth... Oh boy was I wrong. After I washed it out, it left my hair feeling extremely brittle and hard. And not to mention, it stayed that way for about 2 days. I am in love with the curl enhancing smoothie by shea moisture, but this deep treatment masque was a total #FAIL

This product did absolutely nothing for my hair as a deep treatment but it works decently as twisting butter/cream. It does leave a lot of buildup on my hair so I only use it if I know I am going to wash my hair fairly soon.

I really wanted to love this product because of all the reviews and because I do love their other stuff but this product just doesn't do it for me. Everytime I try it and no matter what combination I've tried so far (and trust me, I've tried a lot!!) my hair comes out feeling dryer and like straw. The product just kinda sits on my heads and leaves a white residue. That said, I'm also transitioning from years of relaxed hair to natural hair, and I thought it might be the fact that it just wasn't usable in my relaxed hair, so I gave it to my brother to try and he said you really have to rub it in to very wet hair. He also suggested steaming while using it, which I haven't tried (went under the dryer though, nothing happened). Then again, his hair is (obviously) very natural so I'm waiting on my hair to grow out more or for my mom to try it. Btw, my hair is 3c/4a in the center.

The great thing about this is that it's only 10 bucks. I have used this product several times, and I get the same results. It feels like it's just sitting on top of my hair. It's not penetrating through my hair, and when I rinse it out my doesn't feel soft and moisturized.

I just used this mask after shampooing with its corresponded shampoo. It was my first time using it. I also did a overnight pre-shampoo treat. with Darcys coconut oil. First impressions: The smell is not good but not terrible. It's thick and it looked creamy until I put it in my hair. It felt waxy, had no slip at all. I had to carefully apply it in sections on a hair that look puffy, tangled and dry, while still wet ( I still don't know if blame the shampoo or the coconut oil).
It did feel it needed some heat to melt it away. I put a plastic cap for 30 min and it did look softer but still weird, like the hair got heavier and thickier. There was no way I could detangle like that. I rinsed for quite a while and applied my CK Smoothing Cond. which made it much softer. It wasn't hard to detangle with it, as always. Hair is still drying, but so far it looks good. I'll post another review later. So the 2 starts are basically for application feel.

I always end up paying 5-10 dollars for 8-12 ounces of conditioner that lasts me a week or two. Needless to say, conditioning my hair and trying to keep it healthy gets expensive. So I kept looking.
I've been wanting to try a product with shea butter and I pulled reviews from a few on many different sites before making a decision. What swayed me to try the Shea moisture was that I saw it at Target and it didn't have any of the bad ingredients....the reviews were amazing. Plus, I had waited so long doing research that I needed to make a move ASAP because it was time to wash and condition. I figured 12 ounces would last me 2-3 weeks if I only used the produce on weekends.
I have a thick head of 3c hair with 4a in the very back. I decided to try this produce to twist my hair up so it can function as a leave-in conditioner. I was captivated by the scent, though my boyfriend isn't too fond of it. I dipped my finger in and started putting it on my hard to section and detangle before i started twisting and OMG,..changed my life. Twisting usually takes me 3-4 hours of whining and frustration, but I got everything done in 2 hours while watching TV...I even had a good half hour break to put the kid to sleep. I'm content. And the next day my hair still felt so moisturized. My twists usually end up coming out in a day but they lasted three, then I wore it as a twist out for a few days until it was time to wash again. I got less shrinkage, but that could have been due to the preparation...but, then again I prepared better because it was so much easier as a result of the product.
BEST PART: I didn't even go through one-tenth of the product! I mean, I didn't even make a dent in it. It is a shame that my other half doesn't like the smell, because I love it and this product ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE! I don't care how cheesy it sounds, but THANK YOU SHEA MOISTURE!

I'm giving this 3 stars b/c of the properties in this product. However, my hair simply dosen't respond well to an abundance of shea butter and I was aware of this when I purchased the product so I can't be mad at it. It can be used as a leave in or deep conditoner. As a fine hair natural I find that it simply sits on my hair....so I have decided to either dilute it with a VO5 conditoner when I use it as a conditoner or I use this along with water in a bottle to refresh my curls. Overall I would say give it a try but keep in mind that if you have fine hair this product might be too heavy.

    Hi Curlies,

My hair was not to fond of this one, as a DC. I think it may work better with heat, which I have not tried. My loves it in conjunction with the Restorative Conditioner or as a leave in, but not by itself. I would purchase it again though, but this time try it with a heat cap or hooded dryer.

It gives me curls!!! Defined curls too. It's truly amazing as a DC for my hair. I'm always afraid to touch it after I wash it out because I'm afraid to cause frizz . I don't use it too much as a leave-in just because I'm heavy handed. Overall Shea Moisture is really the only company I trust to give me a completely natural product that has nothing but good ingredients for my hair.

If I could give this stuff 0 stars I would. After using the SheaMoisture Moisture Retention Shampoo with amazing results, I applied this expecting my hair to feel heavenly. Um, no. This stuff doesn't really spread that well. It's almost like it spreads on hard when you're trying to put it on your hair. I have tried this stuff on with a cap and without a cap for an hour. I still am unable to detangle my hair. It leaves my hair even more tangled than when I put it on my hair. And moisture? None from this product. My hair was BONE dry after using this (and it felt so moisturized after the shampoo so I'm sure this just stripped my hair). I hater this product, and will certainly not purchase again. Waste of money.

Ok, so this works amazingly well as a masque, but I would NOT recommend leaving it in as a style cream. When I used it as a masque and rinsed it out after 30 minutes, it made my hair soft, defined, and shiny, as well as frizz-free! But when I left it in over night, my hair was sticky and greasy and clumpy all the next day. Use it as a rinse-out treatment, and overall a big thumbs up!

  • 2

Posted by Malx (Type 4b) on 06/12/2011

Pros: inexpensive ($10, NOT $30); subtle scent
Cons: My hair hates this product, it does NOT penetrate my hair at all. As a DC, it just left my hair feeling greasy, as a styler, it just sat on my hair and did not penetrate. It was bad enough so that my lil brother asked me to wash it out (he has never even payed attention to my hair (until that day).
I tried to mix a table spoon of it to my other DC treatments... it made them less effective. I tried to use it at different steps and different ways... until I gave it away....

Side note: It costs $10.00 at Target not $30.00. I don't know why it says that above.

From the moment I washed out my hair from the DC treatment, my hair was amazingly soft and manageable. I didn't use a comb at all -- I just raked through my hair with my finger and it's beautiful!

Scent of this is incredible. Just like the rest of the line. Great price and value too, as very little is needed. 1 curl off because this seems to work the best for me only with other SM products and not as well with other brands. Didn't work for me as a leave in. Didn't dc with it either, but used as a regular rinse out. It was on only for a few minutes. But seem to work fine. Not very detangling but not bad enough to have a problem with. When I was rinsing out my hair didn't feel all that soft, but did feel strengthened. Which is why I think it felt bad as a leave in. Leave ins work better if they are softening. When I left this in my hair felt hard. So after rinsing out I used SM milk as a leave in and smoothie as a styler, air dried and it looked great. I'll stick to using the whole line together.

I used it first as a deep conditioner sat under my bonnet after I rinsed it out my hair had so much slip the comb glided through. I then combined it with aloe vera gel for my twists and when I took the twists down today they were so shiny, well moisturized and well defined! This is definitely a keeper since it's a 2-n-1 product and for only $10 at Target makes it even better :) I will definitely start using the entire line from now on.

This product worked better as a styling aid/moisturizer for me. As a deep treatment masque, it didn't do much for me. In fact my regular conditioners worked better. I didn't try it with oils, but IMO, it's advertised as a deep treatment masque already, so I'm expecting it to do so with no additives. I love it as a moisturizer though. A little goes a long way, like between dime and quarter size for your whole head depending on length. If you use too much, it'll give your hair a white/ashy look. For the price though, not bad, I'll repurchase if I ever get tired of the scent of the Curl Enhancing Smoothie, but I don't foresee that ever happening.

This product is ok when used alone...but when you modifiy it by adding a few oils (I use castor, rice bran and sweet almond) and a bit of honey, it becomes amazing. I usually add those things, and sit under my heat cap for about 30 mins and my hair feels amazing. I've also added this to more protein rich deep conditioners to balance them out and its good like that also. The only reason that it gets 4 curls rather than 5 is that I have to modifiy it to get the wow factor. But the price (its $10 at Target not sure why its showing as $30 here) and the face that I can get it on the ground make up for that.

I really like this. I've only used it as a deep conditioner with heat and it makes my hair very soft. Though the ingredients are the same, She Moisture has altered the texture and aroma of this product a bit since I first purchased it back in March 2010. It used to have the consistency of cake batter now it's like a whipped butter cream. I preferred the cake batter consistency, but it's not a deal breaker. This has the signature frankincense and myrrh, vanillaish scent like every other goldish/tanish labeled product Shea Moisture carries. All-in-all I'm very satisfied with this condish and I will continue to purchase it.

Used the SheaMoisture DT after a henna application and since it was late ended up sleeping with the product in my hair. This DT left my hair SOFT and soooo very easy to detangle and my hair is super tangly. The smell is pleasant and the consistency thick. For optimal application hair does need to be soaking wet, otherwise I think it's easy to use too much product which could end up being less cost effective. I will likely purchase this again for my mostly 3c hair.

I honestly sat with this stuff in my hair for 30 minutes with a hot towel over my head, and did NOT come out with moisturized hair. I guess because since my hair is more on the coarse side, it did not do much. My hair felt like straw. I detangled with a wide tooth comb...and I must say, this stuff is FAR from a detangler! No bueno
Keep in mind that I am a CG who is trying to repair my curls from heat damage!
