Sulfate Free Hair Products

DevaCare's 3-Step Kit

Sulfate free hair products are becoming more and more popular with curly and textured hair consumers. Unlike conventional shampoos which contain harsh sulfates, sulfate-free shampoos and cleansers are more moisturizing and do not strip the natural oils from your hair.

The most commonly used harsh sulfates are sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS) which are powerful detergents that also create the foaming nature of shampoos. Shampoo manufactures are now starting to remove these harsh sulfates and replace them with alternative ingredients that will still cleanse the hair. You may not get the foaming action of a regular shampoo, but these sulfate free shampoos and cleansers still do the job.

Become a Label Reader

If you are looking for sulfate free shampoos or cleansers, it's best to read the labels. Try to find a product that contains milder surfactants with a lot of moisturizing agents.

Use Silicone Free Styling Products

Using styling products that are silicone free guarantees that you will not have a lot of product build which can cause dry and brittle hair. Milder sulfate free hair products will not remove product build up, however, so if you like to use curly hair care styling products that have non-water based silicones in them, you will have to use a regular shampoo to remove them.
